yuck!!I hate it,why the hell do they do it!I remember having my ears pierced when i was 13 and it was like some sort of coming of age thing,i was really excited and i felt really grown up after.But to do it to a baby who has no say in the matter is abuse surely?What do you think?

Why put your baby through it. Is there an urgent medical reason to have it done. I think not. It is cruel not to mention chavtastic.

Regardless of the social issues, the fact is that it can be dangerous, and personally I think that any piercing of the body should not be done until the child is old enough to at least be asked, Some cultures drag a screaming female child and hold her down to circumcise her and make her have a lifetime of difficulties, but that does not mean it is ok.

I agree with Jake the Peg. It is not my cup of tea at all, but this is no reason to demean a portion of society who wish to do it to their children.

People moan about the big brother nation/nanny state we are becoming and here above we have a (possibly) cross-section of society denigrating another section because of their fashion sense or the social milieu they find themselves in.

I was 21 when I got my ears pierced and it hurt so much I fainted (I'm no wuss, I gave birth without a fuss). My daughter is 5 and has asked a few times to have it done. Mainly as a result of seeing classmates with pretties in. I've TOLD her father (who wants to give in to her) that as soon as she's able to hold an arguement and make her point she can have them done. I reckon that's bought me at least 8 years!
