Buying alcohol at 18

When did it bcome law that a person had to be 18 years old before they could purchase alcohol?

it became an offence to try to purchase alcohol if you were under 18 in the 2003 act i think

Sorry dot. It was law long before that. I was breaking the law 50 years ago when I was drinking at 17. That act was just the latest in a long line.

dot has given the correct answer to the question as you have phrased it.

Prior to the 2003 Act it was illegal to sell alcohol to a minor - the seller committed an offence but the minor did not. Now it is also an offence for a minor to attempt to purchase alcohol.

OK I bow to pedantics. How long has it been against the law to sell alcohol to under 18s? Not counting Cider, or perry when having a meal.

Kempie. As an aside to yours. How come my youngest son was fined �10 for purchasing beer under the age of 18 back in 1982.

i think until 2003 u were allowed 2 buy alcohol at 16 just not drink it
