Why do people feel the need to spit? I mean, yes, for someone who has just been running / playing football or whatever, I can see the need from time to time to eject some saliva, but walking down the road?? Come on. I don't really see the need, or is it a display of 'I don't care about anything and can do what I want wherever I want' - it generally tends to be those of a chav-like disposition, but I may be wrong on this...

It's disgusting innit?

I nearly throw up each time I see these disgusting goblets on the pavements, and I think I really would hurl if I stood on one!

Like you, I don't see the need. I reckon it's a case of yooofs trying to look cool with their mates.
I would love to ask the culprits, if it makes them feel so big and strong, why can't they pick it up?

Ha ha!! What makes me wonder is that a lot of the time I see these blokes (not always 'the yoof of today') walking along the street with their missus, and the women don't say owt when the blokes hockle all over the footpath. Perhaps they congratulate their other half on a fine trajectory and consistency. Or maybe they try and beat the distance achieved themselves.
It is a disgusting, unhealthy habit and seems to be very common amongst Middle Eastern & Asian men. With TB (which we had virtually wiped out) on the increase - particularly in the immigrant population - I think it is time that the law was made effective, with large fines - to try to reduce it happening.
I think that footballers set an example on televised matches. Why do they do it? You don't see tennis players doing it and theirs is a strenuous sport.

I can remember that, when I was a child (in the 50's) there were signs in the buses saying "NO SPITTING" so it's not a new thing, although, as JK2 mentions, that may have been something to do with TB.
Ahhhh! I'm with you on this one - I absolutely hate it when people spit. G R O S S !
I hate it too and when men blow their nose's not using a hankie or tissue. They hold one nostril and blow out of the other,,Big YUK.
Im with steved i can see no reason why it seems to be allowed ot the football pitch. There is never a good excuse for spitting unless it is down the loo in in the basin in private. Public spitting is gross.
I regret to say that you do see tennis players doing it - even at Wimbledon! It is a repulsive habit anywhere by anyone and there is absolutely no excuse.
Is it like marking your territory?
Steve D, your answer reminded me of this:-

There was a young man from Darjeeling
Travelled by train from London to Ealing.
It said on the door
'Don't spit on the floor'
So he carefully spat on the ceiling!
i only spit if i have to. if im somewhere and i cough and get phlem (spell check) i will look about and won't spit it out if there are people about. Thats because i do agree its discusting and people need to respect that other people don't like to see it.
