hehehe Red, I also distincly getting a rollocking off the woman who lived across from us, she'd just had her wall pebble-dashed, and I spent a memorable afternoon flicking out the little pebbles because the putty wouldnt set due to the heat. She went crazy and frogmarched me to my mum :-(
Thanx for the link Bigmamma - everyone obsesses about Felicity Kendall - but for me the real dirty b1tch was Penelope Keith - she could plough my field any day !
I remember the summer of 76. The feeling of waking up every morning and looking out of the window and seeing a slight mist and knowing it was going to be another glorious day. I had a three week holiday in Wales and remember seeing a heat haze for the first time ever. I don't remember the invasion of ladybirds, though my friend remembers being bitten by them.
I remember they had posters everywhere depicting a superman type charachter catching a drip falling out of a tap in a bid to encourage people to save water. They had one up at school, I was 8 at the time.
In deepest darkest Berkshire it was horribly hot. The heat haze every day, stand pipes, my Dad was a fireman so we were extra aware things were bad. The groung being rock hard if you fell over. My Mum didn't drive and we had a big day out planned but we all had to troop home when my sister got sun stroke waiting for the bus to turn up. It was grim I tell ya.I still hate the heat now.
