PS I have watched animals being killed for food on a farm and not been too squeamish - slaughter houses are a completely different thing!

13:43 I personally realise the need for animals to be bred for slaughter for human consumption

So where and what is the need ? i'm not saying everyone should be Veggie-but I don't see a need . Just as there is no Need for alcohol or crack.
I'll admit that until recently when we bought chicken at the supermarket, we paid little attention as to how it was reared, however since we watched that thing on channel 4 recently we now only buy free range chicken, it's worth paying that bit extra knowing that it was reared in as near natural conditions as possible
The need is that people eat meat Brionon and will continue to eat meat, so we need to produce it to satisfy the consumer - unless we all turn vegetarian.
Personally, I can live without meat, but that's my choice.
May I answer that.

I will vigorously argue the human body needs meat. Not soya tofu Linda McCartney mushroom protein socialist sausages but real red meat.

As the odious Gillian McKeith says "You are what you eat". Well I am more akin to a nice shoulder of lamb or rack of BBQ ribs than I am to a Quinola salad or oatmeal loaf.

And, I apologise to any veggies, vegetarians ALWAYS look ill and undernourished.
Good on you 4GS! I leave near to a huge battery chicken farm and the owner is the richest (and greediest) man I know. It totally sickens me. Personally, I think it is dirty money.
Although not a lover of meat,my men folk enjoy it. I believe that man has always eaten meat and that humans are designed to be omnivorous. We have canine teeth after all. It is down to choice. However, if meat is produced it shouldn't be produced at the expense of animal welfare. So Wardy, I hope you are prepared to pay for good meat (if expensive) from humanely farmed and slaughtered animals, preferably from the UK.

Enjoy your steaks!
I once watched the autopsy of a yorkshire terrier when doing work experience while on my lunch break so I guess I'd be ok.

But that giving birth description may have just put me off the idea of starting a family for life.
mr g's family have been in the meat trade for a long long time and he himself was brought up to slaughter meat from the age of 4 for the family business, it didnt bother him then and still doesnt, and he is still in the business its all in a days work
Funnily enough China, I could watch an autopsy or even perhaps operate on an animal (if I knew what I was doing). I just couldn't stand seeing animals hung up and killed on a factory line.

As for the birth description, don't you believe it (says she who had caesarian births!). But, 'unnecessary screaming', well I would like to see the average bloke stay quiet!!
Been there, seen it - and yes, it DID put me off for a while. It made me feel ill, but I still eat meat in moderation.
Lol China- it's not as bad as Abdul said!!!!
Absolutely Abdul - and can I say as well, the vegetarians I have met have, without exception, been so bloody pious about the whole thing that I would eat meat even if I didn't like it just to spite them.

There used to be a real militant veggie on this site a few years ago (can't remember her name) who tried to win an argument over this by posting links to the PETA website. Anybody who ever used PETA as an argument against eating meat is as mad as a box of frogs.
One of the hardest blokes I ever met was a sergeant major in the Army, a lifelong veggie. Hard as nails he was, over 6"6 pure muscle, I'd like to see you tell him he was looking ill and undernourished Minter,
Thing is, I'm a lot more squemish these days but the fact remains that I like veal and I eat my steaks rare and I never want to give that up. I enjoy meat. So perhaps that's what's overcome my intolerence for bodily fluids.

However I can't eat a child with a nice bottle of red and some asparagus so perhaps that's what's made the whole giving birth image so repulsive.... Although i gather that eating children is not usually the reason for giving birth to them.
I have a son who is a veggie ..his choice ..he doesn't look ill ..he's six foot four and built like a brick outhouse .He doesn't inflict his views on others or try to convert them to vegetarianism. So he is an exception. He has what are called manners . He eats what I cook, just no meat .He's quite happy to watch us eat meat while he tucks into the veg and stuff. And he doesn't eat pretend meat either .They are not all pious preachers. He would never presume to tell someone what they should and should not eat .
Firstly, and I did apologise for my views beforehand, I said undernourished NOT underfed.

My interpretation of this is size and height are not an indicator. Thise idiots on "Freaky Eaters" are hardly starving are they?

But I would argue that veggies get more colds, feel the cold, have more viral infections, heal longer and get tired.

Of all the celebrity veggies, can you think of a sports star who is veggie?

I can't.

Sorry mate but we disagree on the word 'Need'.
Not true ...my son is an HGV driver ..he works damn hard and is rarely if ever ill and has bags of energy ..plays football and cricket .We all get colds veggie or not .
The toughest Sporting event,'The Iron man' has been won 3 times by a Veggie. Carl Lewis was Veggie when winning his Gold Medals. So ,if you can't think of a Sporting Veggie it's because you didn't bother to find out. OK ?
