I started in my current job about 11 weeks ago or so. When lunch comes the female employees really get stuck into their co-workers. And one of my female co-workers even commented something like she hoped they get another man for with all the female managerial & female employees it's just a nasty atmosphere. Why are women like that? But then again why are people people?

You appear to have found some particularly odious people and projected their failings onto the rest of their sex.

Not all men are violent with their fists, just as not all women are violent with their tongues. Some men are violent with their tongues, some women are violent with their fists.

Most men are not violent in either sense. Most women are not violent in either sense.
Some men, and women, are violent with both fist and tongues.

As you said yourself, people are just people.
Everyone knows that the femle of the species is deadlier than the male
What industry/profession are you in out of interest? I have heard friends talk about working in environments like this, but I have never experienced it. I work in the library sector. There are loads of women (including women bosses) and a big mix of ages etc. In every place I have worked it's been a really nice atmosphere and you just don't get bitchiness not even between the women in professional positions and those in the more dogsbody roles. I'd say that although the women I've worked with want to do well and move up the career ladder, you just don't get that nasty competitiveness. I have temped in offices though and experienced this atmosphere and it is horrible.

I wonder whether women behave like this sometimes because it is less acceptable for them to be openly competitive. One thing I notice about men at work is that they don't need to hide their ambition. They can be very open about how much they are going to fight for a promotion and I have worked with guys who would happily reel off a list of their talents/skills. So, I guess they kind of get it out of their system. If a woman walked around saying how wonderful she was or made it obvious she was going to fight for a promotion I feel she would be judged more than a man.
Do you work in the clothing factory in 'Coronation Street' ?
I've often found that women bosses are far worse then men.

At work our current manager is about to be moved to another store (I work in a Co op) and i'm dreading a woman taking his place.
I have a woman boss.Nobody here likes her, they're all frightened to talk to her!!
She is a bit like Carla in Corrie!!
I think Puff has a valid point in that women seem very ready to put other women down, and also seem less ready to accept difference. I work with a group of women who can be very nice but also on (too many) occasions leap with gusto into a mobbing session behind the back of whoever they have selected. I haven't seen blokes do this as readily or with as much relish.
It starts in childhood. Boys fight physically (and it's soon forgotton, girls are mean and catty and carry it on for ages)
I think arguments last longer with women.
If women had been in charge during war times the world I think wars would have been longer.
Men just slog it out and it seems to be over with.
Though probably Tigerlilly the women would argue longer and keep the negotiatons going until things hopefully got sorted out, rather than start a violent bloody war.

Maybe I am exaggerating a little but it's just I've forgotten the female employees niceness to your face and the criticisms behind your back. And I have had a terrible drunken thieving male boss. Another question: do you think that it's actually women that tear other women down in the workplace than men tearing women down?
