For people who are interested.

We finally received a letter from the Headmaster today. This was a reply to a meeting we had regarding an incident in my Daughters RE class at school.

The headmaster has apologised (on behalf of the Teacher in question,) and has said that the Teacher has agreed with us that the punishment was wrong and that my Daughters reaction was innocent and not intentionally disrespectful to the Muslim religion.

We are disappointed that we did not receive a letter of apology direct from the Teacher as well, this is what we requested, so we may still ask for one. Although I feel we shouldn't need to ask again.

The Teacher will be talking to the whole class to explain why she punished the three children that "giggled" and why she now agrees that it was wrong of her to do so. We may request to sit in on that one!

Thanks again to all who took the time to reply to the original question. It helped a great deal.

Blimey! You're right though, the teacher highlighting is just encouraging an us and them culture.

I'm glad you didn't just sit on it and I'm glad you've go a resolution, even though it's not with the teacher in question.

Next parents night should be interesting ;)

Glad to hear it is all resolved.

I should think an aplogy letter from the headteacher would suffice, since they will be representing the school and the teacher.

Hopefully now you can move along and put it all behind you for your daughters sake.

icemaiden i am sorry but i would not want an apology letter from the headteacher i would want one from the teacher involved. i could have sent you a letter of apology.
it looks to me like the headteacher has given you this apology to shut you up.sorry but that is the way i see it.

I agree with you Pusspuss, which is why today we have replied to the letter and have asked again for an apology from the Teacher involved, in writing. Reminding the head teacher that this is what we originally asked for.

In fact I have to correct myself here, when I received the letter I read it very quickly as I was rushing to get to work, when I arrived home I read it again and although the Head agreed with us he did not actually apologise!

We also mentioned this in the letter that we gave in today so we shall see what comes back.

Hello icemaiden. I'm pleased to hear that the headteacher has written to you acknowledging that what happened was wrong and particularly that the teacher herself has now conceded that she was wrong. It doesn't quite constitute an apology though, I agree.

I think you deserve an apology not just for the teacher's actions, but also the distress it has caused your family....which it appears has not been acknowledged.

Could be that's the best you're going to get though, but good on you for standing your ground in the first place.

As I already stated on your other thread, personally I think the teacher's actions have been counter-productive and done more to foster prejudice in those young minds than to promote acceptance and understanding.

Duh! Just read your OP again and realised that the headmaster DID apologise, it's just the teacher who hasn't directly apologised. Sorry for my fuzzy brain but it is late!

I think that as 'the school' has given you an apology for the actions of the teacher, that's as far as it will probably go. It may be prudent to let it rest now.

I can't help wondering how the teacher is going to back peddle as far as addressing her class is concerned. I'd love to be a fly on the wall!
