I signed this petition ages ago and just got an EMil from Downing St:

For once it looks like they are actually looking into on line petitions.

I obviously agree that there should be a day set aside for us to remember and reflect and for it not to be a 'jolly'.

How do others feel?

I don't agree with it. I don't think you should have a bank holiday for 'remembering'. People will remember if they want to on any day without having an enforced bank holiday. We already have rememberance Sunday.

Why can't we have a bank holiday just to be happy and have fun, so that people can celebrate it in whatever way they feel fit - a sort of National Be Happy Day!

Sorry Drisgirl.

Kinda went off kilter here -my intention was really to highlight that a -the Goverment do seem to act upon petions and b -well obviously I 'signed' it or else I wouldnt have had an EMail back.

It was only a general thread to see what others views were -like either for or against -thats all.

Jake -I wasnt imposing anything on anyone -man -I feel that people are mature enough to make their own point without berating others.

No need to apologise Lottie -it was posted in such a way that I was asking for others opinions.

Thanks
Re read your question

You were going on about people not remembering and reflecting but treating bank holidays as a jolly.

It's one thing to support a bank holiday but when you start prescribing how people should behave on that day that's another thing altogether!

That was my opinion.I dont feel the need to expand and berate anyone else whose opinion differs.

To be honest I'd welcome the extra day off work but it won't mean much to me as the last thing I'd be doing would be thinking about war.

I do however, really like the idea of another day off in June, not just because it'd hopefully be sunny (although that goes a long way) but I do actually like Jakes idea. Celebrating freedom is a much better way to remind ourselves of what was faught for in my opinon.
Well I still want a 'National Be Happy Day' where we are all forced to be nice to one another and love everybody (even on AB).
Midsummers Day perhaps China?
Is that not the same as May day then Lofty? (Serious question)
24th June actually China.

First day of summer 21st June
Midsummers Day 24th June

I don't really get it!!

Ah, see Quizmonster's reply here:

I hate bank holidays, they are like a sunday on steroids
They do make the Sunday that proceeds them much better though Cazz - would you agree?
no, I dont Im afraid, I hate sundays as well as bank holidays, both together is the ultimate gruesome twosome
Oh dear! :o(

I'm with you cazz, I don't like Sundays/Bank holidays either & I don't think we need one for Remembrance.
