Naomi, if I knew where it was written I'd be tempted to look, if I knew where it was written I would'nt be blowing the froth of AB.
Many people smoke and live to a ripe old age etc, Bill Shankly famously once said "at least he was a healthy man when he died" it's the randomness of death that puzzles me I see (almost daily) the most incredibly dangerous pieces of driving or kamikazi pedestrian but they survive by some weird chance and when I say that I was once stopped at lights as they changed to green a passenger asked me something, distracted I paused for a moment before I pulled away just as a car went straight through the lights at about 40 MPH, I remember reading a story about an American soldier who got shot in the head the bullet penetrated his helmet and spun around the rim cutting his scalp (any soldier will remark just how much space there is either side of a bullet) we have freedom of choice we can choose to try and live our lives towards a good end or not
Where you detined to meet your husband, do you think you were meant to be together, do you think there is somebody for everybody? 3 question 3 answers..
Chaka you're an atheist the answer (for you) is no, everything is random, for others the question is a bit more complicated.

What happens depends largely on the consequences of ones actions. How one chooses to respond to a given situation is determined by what one believes will serve their own interests. The success one enjoys from the choices they make is determined by how closely ones beliefs correspond to reality.
Beyond the causal unfolding of fate there is only one pre-determining factor for that which will ultimately transpire, the breadth and scope of ones knowledge. To differentiate between what one knows and what one believes to be true, it is the understanding of what knowledge is, where knowledge comes from, how it is acquired processed, conceptually integrated and verified that one must learn.
Apart from a basic grasp of the nature of reality, ones proper relationship to it and how one achieves certainty of it, one is by default left to drift downstream, a victim guided only by the fickle finger of fate, like a water saturated log teetering precariously over the precipice of the inevitable water fall.
The choice to believe that ones thoughts, actions, hopes and fears are all predetermined by destiny is the choice to attempt an escape from an inescapable reality, of all possible choices perhaps the worst possible choice one can make second only to a refusal to know what is possible if one chooses to acknowledge the responsibility to learn how best to live ones life.
You can run but you cannot hide from the nightmare of a reality of evasion and the choice not to work to fulfill you dreams.

What i'm getting at, as i've said before, is that IF there are some people that can accurately predict the future, and it happens, then surely, nothing we can do or say will change it, so everything is pre -determined, and that, for believers, would be God.
I'm not saying I believe this, I put it forward purely as a discussion point, because throughout history. to the modern day, there are people who say they can predict the future, and people who believe it.
Threfore, its an interesting topic.

Hi Lonnie, hope you and family are all well, People will never agree with what I believe, but I honestly believe that part of our lives is determined the day we are born, in as much as we have a time clock in our body and that decides when we die, wether it be 1 year or 100 years, call it fate, call it whatever, also sometimes during life things happen for a reason, for instance, you might decide to buy a house, the sale falls through, you are really sad, but within a few months, you are made redundant or something else happens so that you can't afford the mortgage, so it was for the right reasons it fell through,
an instance of the time we are alloted is about my dad, during the war, he was in the navy, all of the men he signed up with died, and 6 times when he was to board certain ships, he was called off and placed on another ship, all the ships he should have gone on were sunk and all crew died, so was it luck, or was it just that it was not his time to die?

Mibs I'm not a Hindu, but everything you've just said flies in the face of (what I understand it to be) one of the most basic premises of Hinduism given that India has (or at least had) one of the fastest growing economies in the world and given that India is the world's largest democracy then that's an awful lot of "fatalists" seizing the day.
Ray, great story my Uncle (God rest his soul) had similar experience got taken off his ship and transferred onto Corvettes one of his oldest friends stayed aboard and perished when it sank.
Lonnie, get yourself down to Zavvi and watch a film called "Premonition it's Japanese (so it's got subtitles) but it's really good, it's story is something along the lines of your question and it's subtopic.

Lonnie, as you know, I dont think the biblical God was what his supporters think he was - and I do think he had not only, as you suggest, a warped sense of humour, but a sadistic and twisted personality. Please note I said had. He no longer exists - and, in my opinion, thats just as well.
Everton, my answers to your questions.
1. No, I wasnt destined to meet my husband. I met him. Thats all.
2. No, I dont believe we were meant to be together. I met him, we fell in love, and we have a pleasant life. If I'd met someone else, the outcome would possibly have been the same.
3. I presume you mean that only one person will be right for another? No, I dont believe that.

Thanks, naomi. I can't think why they can't answer for themselves.
If it is the biblical God then there's a logical problem, because that God is also supposed to be omnipotent.
But if everything is already predetermined thenGod has no power to change anything. Therefore he cannot be omnipotent.
S which is he - omniscient or omnipotent?

Once a man asked a question to someone with knowledge that how much control do I have on me and how much is out of my control.
He asked him to lift his one leg up. He did. Then he asked him to lift the other leg as well. How can I lift my both legs up he said. That is how much you have control on yourself. The other man said. God has given you control to lift one leg but you can not lift both.
As I said earlier that human have a limit and within that limit they have control on things. But they do not have control over the result. It is like a horse tied to a peg with 50 meter rope. Now if the horse want to run around at 50 meter radius or 10 meter , it is horses choice. One thing he cant do is to go out of 50 meter.
Same like that God has given us brain, senses and ability to decide over certain things. We can not decide when and where Sun rises and sets. But we can decide what we eat or drink. But what choice we would make is known to God. Just like that there are so many things we do not plan or at least they do not go as we plan. What ship or Jet you board or do not board, where and how you die, who you marry, these are few of many things we cant do anything about. I personally missed a train once and that train was service to Paddington that had accident at Goldhawk Lane. When I missed that, I was upset as I was going to miss my appointment, and once I found out about the accident, I did not give a damn about missed appointment. That is life.

An interesting question which also has massive implications one of which is : What about the power of prayer ? Throughout the world we are told that anything is possible if you believe and pray enough. Now if that is the case then events can be changed which disproves pre-determination. On the other hand it is claimed that a billion prayers were offered up for the safe return of little Madeline McCaine and that didn't work either.

The power of prayer.
The purpose of Prayer, from my perspective as a fairly longtime member of the Human Race, is to give comfort to believers in the Biblical God, and I wouldn't knock that, as i've seen it happen many times.
However, in prayer, you can ask for the recovery of a loved one, sometimes it happens, sometimes not,
The best example is 'Peace in the World' wonder how many prayers have been uttered for that.
Thing is, how do we know a prayer has been answered?.
However, if everything has been pre-determined, (by the Biblical God), we wouldn't know, we just believe we have freedom of choice, when in reality, everything we say or do, even this thread, has been pre-planned.
'The eyes of Love' I like that, but more like the eyes of the the biggest Sadist there can ever be.

Your are born and you will die....that's all that is predetermined. Everything else between is your choice alone but influenced by others close to you. However, the end choice is yours alone.
If you swallow a tin of baked-beans today and spent all day in the loo that is entirely your choice! If you starve today and gave food money to Oxfam, your choice and conscience......nothing to do with a super-power.
A prayer for someone's well-being is telepathy, a sensory act much neglected but real.
