Why do so many people in this country appear to have negative praise for the above ?. Is it just media driven or do people have minds of their own?.

Yes they do have minds of their own. Sometimes the press picks up on what people are actually thinking!!! I know... go figure that one LOL

From my point of view these 'Chelsea tractors' are status cars for the affluent chavs in cities where you don't actually need them.

You don't need them to take the kids to school.. They have been proven (don't ask me how as I read these things and don't feel the need to note down covanence) that if you are hit with one you are more likely to be seriously injured than a 'regular' car.

You don't need them to do the weekly shopping.... you more than likely don't have 50 children to feed and if you did you'd have a mini van not a 4wd.

You don't need one all year just to go to the country 2 or 3 times a year. Hire one for the couple of weeks a year you want to pose as the counrty set.

I feel safer in a big car is bolliacks when I get my tank out... How small and insignificant do you feel then?

I just want to show off that I can afford a big car.... So what no one cares (except other 4wd owners perhaps) and my car isn't on the never never and is cheeper to run. How much are your tyres then?

The only place to park them is the parent and toddler or disabled parking as they are worried they a) won't fit in a proper space or b) if they do, that someone might take acception to not being able to get in or out of their car because your tw@t car has boxed them in.
i see your point, but everyone is entitled to drive what they like....They pay more for the car, more for the petrol, more for the road tax, so why not have a nicer, bigger car? myself, 1.6 golf, just stating what i think is fair...
lot of generalisation there cassa, a lot of disabled people own 4x4's because they are easier to get into and it can carry their equipment (oxygen, wheelchairs ect)

why would anyone be showing off in a 4x4? they cost about the same as most cars, also do you have the same narrow mind about saloon cars that have 4x4 capabilities?

the carbon footprint of some saloon cars is significantly more than a land rover discovery.

I'm not saying they shouldn't have one, just that a lot of people think they are too big for city living/driving.

Having enough money (or not if they are financed up to their eyeballs) is neither here nor their. It's about what is appropriate within the city living contexts.
are disabled people not allowed to live in the city then cassa?
Generalisation is the name of the game as there will ALWAYS be people or situations that will call for the opposite of what you are thinking/saying and would be perfectly justified in doing so for their needs.

I suppose it is what you regard as 4wd and as I mentioned chelsea tractors that is what I was talking about not other types of 4wd. So if a disable person actualy needed a chelsea tractor then that is what they NEED.

But need and want is what it boils down to. I need a car for xyz and car a and b will do it but so will car c but with more sh!t on it. I would go for a or b as I don't feel the need to spend money on sh!t impressing anyone else or making myself feel better because I can get the 'better' car.

So no I don't have a narrow mind about all 4wd cars just chelsea tractors (at the moment LOL)
It takes me so long to write an answer I'm getting out of sink now. Hopefully it will read right...Knowing my luck it will be all over the place though. lol
so because they choose a car that you dont like, you feel it is okay to be critical of them?

need and want is subjective, just because you use a car for your reasons does not mean others do the same.

people buy 4x4s for a lot of reasons, you seem to be stuck in the idea that its all about gloating and showing off, which is wrong but obviously the main reason you dislike them as it is mentioned heavily in your posts.

Yes. In the same way that anyone can critices anything they don't like.

I would have thought that want was more subjecive than need. I need water but I want wine. I gave no idication, other than the already mentioned, that anybody would need to use a car for the same reasons as me. Just examples of common uses and the reasons I think this type of car should be used.

No not the main reason but it is an influence.

The main reason I dislike them is simply the size for city living. I don't realy care and didn't mention carbon footprint or anything like that.

If you read my original post I mention the SAFTEY aspect for both PEDESTRIANS and the driver as well as parking. The NEED for it for a couple of holidays and showing off twice, three times if you count the term status cars which they are known to be.

My second post reiterated the size of the car for city living.

My third post clarifies what I ment by 4wd and gives my opinion on over buying.

Sorry should read

Shouldn't be used

well I live in a city and the 4x4s have never really bothered me, I dont regard them a posing cars either, I just dont really think about them, I assume people have their reasons for buying whatever car they want to buy. I was irked by your generalisations about the people who owned the cars.

shallow generalisations, pedestrian safety is at the grace of the driver, not the car. we trust the drivers of buses, vans and lorries which are all bigger vehicles than 4x4s

In fact the most dangerous vehicle on the roads in terms of accidents is a motorbike

again doc, not the cars fault, its the bad driver.

I watched a female driving instructor make 3 terrible attempts to park a car this morning and she is supposed to be the teacher!
The drivers of busses and van should be qualified to use them. Unlike the chelsea tractor driver who is (OMG another generalisation coming) used by those not trianed to drive bigger cumbersome transport.

Everyone generalises about something. And that's not a generalisation. One can either generalise or be spacific. If for instance I know only one short person who was an arrogent bigot then could I assume that all small people are arrogent biggots or should I 'listen' to the general concensus on short people and come to an informed oppinion based on what I know and what is known?

Your right saftey is at the grace of drivers. But if those drivers should fail then the damage is far greater ,in the same way that guns don't kill people the people that own them do. Just look at how many guns are owned in the US and how many people are shot.... It is the same argument I think.

i think its the green eye...i have been equally annoyed by 'tractors' as i have minis....each to their own, if i could afford a mercades m class, id have one tomorrow
lol, okay whatever....
wot eva init
I own and drive a 4x4 because I like it and I can.

You can hate my car as much as you like, but you dont need to hate me for having it and enjoying it.
It's about what is appropriate within the city living contexts.

So do people who live in houses with more bedrooms than occupants also get on your goat?
Cassa333 is right - well done.

Lots of disabled people have them?
What rubbish.

Blacked out range rovers the most common.
