What to wear to a Sikh wedding?
3 Answers
I have been invited to a Sikh wedding as the guest of a friend who knows the couple well and I'm unsure what to wear? I know I will be expected to remove my shoes and cover my head in the temple, but other advice please!

Keep your dress modest, don't upstage the couple and don't make a fool of yourself by getting drunk (contrary to popular belief, many Sikhs do like a drink even though it's not strictly allowed) or making a pig of yourself.
Sikhs are very used to having 'western' guests in their temples and at their weddings. They won't berate you if you're not sure what to do. More likely they'll just put you right without a fuss and try to ensure that you enjoy the whole thing as much as they do.

Don't wear a black or white outfit and, as others have said, be prepared to cover your head in the temple with a nice scarf. Apart from that, anything you would normally wear to a wedding will be fine. I do know that If you were able to buy, or borrow, a shalwar kameez (Asian tunic & trousers)for the occasion they'd be dead impressed. I wore that many years ago at my Sikh friend's wedding and her whole family were absolutely delighted. You don't have to do that of course, there will no doubt be plenty of other people there in their western finery just as there was at my friend's wedding. An Asian wedding is quite an experience, you'll have a great time.
