I have joined facebook, because the world and his bleedin' wife are on it and the girls at work are always telling me i'm missing out.
So i joined, and i must say, i'm really glad i did, as i have finally found a long lost friend from years ago.
Anyway, 'thing is, people are sending me hugs and poking me - and i don't want to be their friends at all!
If I ignore their requests, do they get a message telling them so? I'm worried they might be offended!
I kinda wish they'd leave me alone!

just ignore their requests and the hugs and stuff is optional, you can delete all the hug requests.
Hi people dont get notified if you dont accept their friendship dont worry but if its someone you know maybe a one line sentence to explain would be good.

I dont accept all the application stuff either cos its about 60 per day.

Glad you found your friend.

can't they tell when i am online then?
They can tell if you are online but you can change your status to 'offline'.

Ihn the bottom left hand corner there is a green dot and it says' online' or something like that. Click on this and you can change your status of offline and the dot should go red. It will stay offline until you change it again, even if you log out and back in again later.
deactivated your facebook account and GET A LIFE!!!!!!
just change your settings
hey they do not get a message telling them you dont want to be their friend!
I have done my settings so I get hardly any emails, unfortunately now my bro seems to send me a msg every new friend of mine he sees to tell me how much he doesnt like them and how I shouldnt be speaking to them
I HAVE A LIFE AND I ALSO HAVE FB! So, in general response to the answers given to crisgal........

If u do not accept invites like the ones you are mentioning then the sender will not know that you have ignored them...most people do not mind if you are not into all that! I have made some amazing contacts with people all over the world as I play a FB game....it may sound a bit sad but each to their own! It is all a bit of fun and I generally do not criticise the choices that others make....such as smoking, gambling, swearing etc and I dont expect people to judge me...its jun a bit of fun and a bit of relaxation and a bit more sociable than staring at the TV!! Live and let live is my motto and crisgal just ignore the stuff u r not interseted in and no-one will be offended! xx
facebook might be irritating as it sends lots of email but it is sure a way to know people around the world!

thanks everyone!
With three children and a job, i'm not on it that much!
As I said I have found a very dear friend through it, who I thought I would never find again - so it's ok by me!
