Should Comic Relief be donating 93,000 to the Irish Traveller Movement?
19 Answers
Am I missing the point or are these people an asset to England? I thought these people were thieves, caused trouble and leave detritus everywhere they go.
I know comic relief helps alot of good causes, but why are they helping these people who never contribute to our society. They are just another burden. Should we now be called Soft Britain instead of Great Britain?

I was just about to donate some money, before I spotted it.
I went to the Comic Relief home page. Clicked on where your money goes, clicked on United kingdom, clicked on UK/ England wide and 1/5 of the way down the page there it was. 93,000 going to the Irish Traveller Movement. Helping them to have more of a stake in society.

Perhaps if you bothered to read up on the objectives of the IMTB it might help you to overcome your prejudices:

I can only assume that you've never got to know an Irish travellers. While every group of people will have some 'bad eggs' among them, my own experiences of meeting the Irish travelling community have always been positive.
In particular, when I was a 'trade plater' hitching across the country nearly every day I found that Irish travellers would always stop and give me a lift, even if it meant going well out of their way. If I was a travelling a long distance with them, I was always offered free food and drink (and, on a couple of occasions, even offered money to help me with my onward travels).
Narrow-minded people like you, Stevie (&R1G) could learn a lot about true generosity from many Irish travellers. (When was the last time you gave a hitch-hiker a lift? I always do, even if it means a detour of over a hundred miles. Many Irish travellers are equally generous).

O.k Chris. I have got to admit that 99% of Irish travellers give the other 1% a bad name.
In your opinion they have been good to you, but why do they not pay taxes like everyone else? How do they contribute to our society ? Why don't they live in normal housing? Why do they leave rubbish all over the place? etc...
Perhaps if they was working like other people in the U.K , they wouldn't be on the roads to pick you up as frequently as you stated?
I am not opposed to Irish people, just people taking advantage of the milk of human kindness.

Well Chris, just phone up your "traveller" mates and ask them for the 7k clean up costs last time they gate crashed my local rugby club. Oh and then there was when they camped on a local park and ruined all the footbal pitches so no one could lay there for weeks.
They are the scum of the earth , they give nothing and steal what ain't nailed down. When they finally go they leave a ton of sh1t for whoever to clean up.If they camped in your street mate they'd rob you along with everyone else.
Have you been to Ireland Chris? Well they hate them with a passion too, that's why they're over here sponging off our soft as sh1t, easy touch authorities.
Personally I'd give the councils power to confiscate their Mercs and Porsches to pay for the damage And then to move them on without all the attendant legal bollux.
I've never had good experience with these selfish lowlives It seems you have well congrats, please tell them to forward a cheque for the above to Bournemouth Rugby club.

years ago the travelling community were lovely. They had no intention of settling anywhere, rarely stayed more than a couple of weeks in any one place and always cleaned up before they left as they used to return to the same sites each year and wanted to live in peace - the so called 'travellers' today are nothing but thieving scum...
I live in Wickford, less than halfway to Billericay, (get your maps out), we have the largest Travellers site in Europe, at 'Crays Hill', I'd like to invite anyone who wants to come and see this place, its a mess, the police don't visit, even though they know its a haven for stolen goods and vehicles.
The local residents live in fear, althoughnwe have a good MP, John Baron on the case.
I've never visited any other Traveller site, but if this is typical, and there's good reason to think it is, then the sooner they go back to Ireland, (where they own homes) the better.
Don't think they will though.

I grew up in a rural area and we used to get visited by 'gypsies' and 'didicoys'.
The 'gypsies' would set up camp in the same place year after year.........they would take up the seasonal work on offer; whittle clothes pegs; sharpen blades, and doubtless myriad other things of which I was too young to be aware. They were always spotlessly (if a little eccentricly, to my eyes) turned out and carried themselves with great dignity; they were approachable, exotic and possessed a wealth of traditional songs and stories.
When they left, their camp-site was immaculate.
The 'didicoys' also visited. They were filthy; in dress, attitude and language. Things would go 'missing' when they were in town. They fought anyone who stood up to them. Their camp-sites were a disgrace whilst they lived there and even worse when they left.
If I could be sure that the 'gypsies' were getting my money I'd be happy............but I have a feeling that the 'didicoys' will benefit more than they ought.

a law unto themselves...do what they want take what they want and intimidate (or worse) anyone who gets in there way , they seem to be untouchable by the local plod
Live better than most hard working honest people and dont pay a penny in taxes and still claim all the handouts and benefits available..(collecting them in there nice new shiny 40,000 4x4 )
And if the stories are true many of them have property back in Ireland ..

You're missing the point of Comic Relief Stevie13!
It's not about an ear for an ear, it's about helping people who can't help themselves, there is such a thing as compassion, you should look it up.
If you go through life only helping people who benefit you in some way, well it'd be a pretty shocking existence wouldn't it.

I have met loads of these Irish Travellers and have never seen them doing anything good or contribute to society in any positive way.
My elderly grandad was preyed on by these horrible people, who said they would do a great job on tarmacing his driveway.
These unscrupulous people mixed diesel fuel in with their tarmac and it never set and stayed tacky for ages. In the end my uncles had to shovel the tarmac up and dispose of it at the tip. However the tinkers took 400 off my grandad and was never seen again.
I have also seen tinker kids rifling through sports bags of football teams who played on a local park.
I lived in this area where these tinkers caused nothing but trouble and the crime rate dropped dramatically when they was moved on, however the rubbish they left behind was horrendous.
I am not against the worthy causes Comic relief supports.
What I am against is Comic relief supporting heinous tinkers who have no morals and never pay their way.
They steal and take from the elderly and vulnerable and should not be encouraged to settle in our country.
