I was brought up C of E but now I'm older and able to think for myself I regard the Bible as a Fairy Tale and cannot be taken Literally.
Religion of any Faith which is imposed upon others is wrong.
I have my own beliefs as I believe in a Supreme Creator which I suppose one could classify as God.
Religion is a minefield and I tend to steer well clear.

Religion has an impact on all our lives, whether a believer or not, imho, if for no other reason than it has impacted the moral codes of the world. These in turn have impacted on the laws in each country and on our education systems. Even for those of us who are atheist or ethical humanist, many of the things we regard as the princip,es by which we live are generally derived from religious belief in time past, which has impacted what our parents and grandparents were taught and have taught us.
Is that a lot, some or none Androcles?
I don't want to widen the question out too far (at least not yet) but reading between the lines your suggesting there is some good things in religion, which atheists have cherry picked and secularised for themselves to call their own, and rebranded it as a personal statement as opposed to a collective goal with individual responsibilty, no?
There's nothing wrong with that, the more people doing good and the less people doing harm the better.
But still, how does religion affect your life?

Andocles....you may well be correct, but I have developed my "moral codes" not on any religious edicts, but on the basis of "ease of survival".........hence I do not commit murder, steal, etc as there would certainly a legal price to pay.Simplistic I agree, but pragmatic to the end.

redman...you raise an interesting point. Religion has had it's own way for the past 2,000yrs, but now the gap between religion and science is closing....very , very quickly and may come down to the unthinkable......."Wave Goodbye to Religion"........just a thought.

What I was trying to say, Everton, was not a question of cherrypicking, but that many of the things about the way we live our lives and the principles of behaviour are set by what we have been taught. For example, if you are a Christian, Muslim, Atheist or whatever, did you ever sit down and argue the position out with yourself that you would not walk out and kill somebody in the street? Generally not, because it is one of those taboos that is inherent in the way we are brought up. I was arguing that that comes from religion, whether you believe it or not, and therefore it can be argued that religion has an impact on all our lives, even if it is not overt.
I believe in Nature and live my life accordingly. I believe that whatever is done by humans to alter the natural balance of things, Nature will try to bring it back to balance. This is seen in many ways and IMO more thought should be given to this. All that science does is to 'discover' and use the power of nature.
Well, apart from having to obey laws enacted in part by unelected Bishops sitting in the House of Lords, restrictions when travelling, being searched or scanned before being allowed to enter certain buildings, and other people telling me I‘ll go to hell because I don‘t believe as they do, I spent the whole of 7/7 not knowing if my family were dead or alive, and I live in dread of another day like that. It was the longest and most frightening day of my life. Additionally my husband lost several friends and colleagues on 9/11, so yes religion does have an impact on my life - and it‘s a negative one.
On a less personal note, without religion, children wouldn’t be taught useless and terrifying information for which there is not a shred of evidence, the world would not be seeing the conflict its currently experiencing, thousands of people wouldn’t be suffering and dying unnecessarily of HIV/Aids, and thousands of babies wouldn’t be born infected with the virus. In my opinion, religion is the scourge of this earth, and it has much to answer for.
On a less personal note, without religion, children wouldn’t be taught useless and terrifying information for which there is not a shred of evidence, the world would not be seeing the conflict its currently experiencing, thousands of people wouldn’t be suffering and dying unnecessarily of HIV/Aids, and thousands of babies wouldn’t be born infected with the virus. In my opinion, religion is the scourge of this earth, and it has much to answer for.

The House Of Commons can overrule the House Of Lords every time.
Where are you restricted from traveling to in your daily life?
What buildings are you searched upon entering?
Someone tells you to go to hell? Ignore them, they're idiots, I've lost count of the amount of death threats I've recieved off scallies and smak heads amongst others.
The answer to H.I.V for organised religion is abstinence, that's what they promote.
The useless and terrifying information that kids were taught 50 years ago resulted in less crime, less family break down and happier children.

I'm not neccessarily agreeing with all their solutions, they are just different solutions that other people have to the same problems that they choose to expend their energy on.
I'm all for an elected second chamber and abstinence and conmdoms combined, but my money is not being spent in their missions, so it's not up to me.
