The state of the UK today

A country without any standards of what we once described as decency.
We have become a selfish,greedy,visionless, small minded, unpleasant, lawless, godless and anti social, sexually promiscuous and booze ridden, illiterate litle nation, ruled from Brussels, without backbone, moral integrity and any sense of respect; drowning in a sea of mass immigration we have lost all sense of national identity and pride.
I see the recent expenses scandal to be symptomatic of the corruption and scandal that I believe is endemic in our national and local political public life
We like to pose and posture on the world stage but in reality we are a third world non entity and like the king that had no clothes on, we don't know it.
The sum total of our aspirations can be summed up in our obsession with the superficial and trivial like football, footballers, the X Factor and which minor celebrity is bonking who.
Not written by me but summed up quite nicely and I agree with all the sentiments 100%.

All those things happen, but they are not rife in the way the media make us think they are. I do agree most with the penultimate paragraph, not just the specific obsessions it points to, but as a general statement of people's mental apathy. Whatever anyone might gripe about being wrong with the UK and what has caused our "loss of national identity and pride", ultimately most problems are caused by the public themselves.
We have decided to worship at the out-of-town cathedral known as Tesco's, and thus brought about the serial hollowing-out of our communities, and deprived ourselves of the social centres that once gave us pride and identity at a local level. We choose to ensure mass circulation for rancid tabloids and their impoverishment of national debate, reducing it to drooling simplistic uninformed sloganising. At the same time, we gawp slack-jawed as the same media spoon-feed us their tepid diarrhoea of celebrity gossip, most of it dreamed up by subs who have been ordered to come up with three splashes by 6 by their borderline-cardiac desk editors. And yes I agree, we wade through filthy littered streets, cursing the councils for not doing enough to clear it up, conveniently forgetting we threw all the crap there in the first place (not me though, I never litter).

What a shame native people in the UK can`t just appreciate what we have in this country. There is a lot to be proud of here. The UK is one of (if not the) leading financial centres of the world, we have fantastic medical research and expertise, culture, history, some of the best restaurants in the world, great countryside, without doubt the best, most innovative fashion and music industry, safe aviation, a fantastic sense of humour, great tv (have you watched telly in other parts of the world)?, sexual/racial equality, tolerance, a sense of heritage, fantastic artists, world class architecture. Millions of tourists come here to experience these things every year. No wonder immigrants do so well here. They appreicate these attributes while some of us sit at home and bemoan our lot.

and you said that the UK was filthy. I remember about 11 years ago I did a horse trail riding holiday in Andalucia. We covered about 125 k in a week and one day we had to travel on a tarmac road for a little way (2 miles) before we went back inland again. At one point I was riding my horse in a roadside gulley and there was so much rubbish that people had thrown from their cars that my horse actually tripped and threw me off. Do you think Spain is any cleaner than the uk?

Of course there are dirty parts of Spain and clean parts of the UK and your trip in the backwoods of Andalusia was unacceptable, but my comments were general, and confined to the towns and urban areas of Spain.
In direct answer to your question...YES I do.... infinitely cleaner......the toilets in the cafes are indeed maintained to a higher standard and the bins are emptied at regular intervals, unlike the UK and yes I do agree that it is the indigenous people that are to blame and not necessarily the country..Being an ex Pat I do have to be careful what I say about the UK or other aspects of life as I am soon shouted down. If you read my post I did say that there were pluses and minuses wherever one lived.
