OK, imagine this: It has been proven beyond any doubt with categoric proof that there is no Gods, anywhere or ever has been. even al the religious leaders worldwide have accepted this.
What now?
How would the world take shape?
I think the more extremist cultures and faiths like Muslims would need to war against something, I actually think that if it happened overnight some parts of the human race would never cope and would go into meltdown without their Gods.
Of course I know this could never be proven but just an interesting thought.

If religion disappeared tomorrow it would probably be replaced by extreme forms of nationalism. People, even atheists, need something to believe in.

Refusing to believe in an alleged overseer of reality who controls the weather and dictates the position of the planets among other things might inspire people to seek rational answers to questions regarding the nature of existence and how to promote our mutual survival and well-being, in this life, on this Earth. If religion has proven anything throughout its existence it is that it has failed to provide an alternative to this process.
Sandy, although the religious don't seem to be able to get their heads around it, Atheists don't 'need' something to believe in. They are self-sufficient, and sensibly, their purpose in life is usually to live it to the best of their ability. Like anyone else, they will have opinions, but opinions don't equate to 'faith'.
Sandy, there's nothing bleaker than pain praying desperately to a God who doesn't answer because he isn't there.
Ummmm, I'll get back to that thread when I have time. At the moment I'm cooking dinner and dashing back and forth from the kitchen to my study to put another two-pennyworth in AB! Frustrating when 'life' gets in the way of a good discussion! :o)

Yes Sandy, I believe in the sun the moon in light and dark in fact all material things, I believe in love and hate, in morality and in common decency, I believe in many things.
I do not believe in any God, spirits, ghosts the after life, re-incarnation, life after death, or the the soul. I dont believe in astrology, Tarot cards, witches and warlocks or magic.

I really don't think the world would be much different. Religions would still exist but without the 'God' bit which is only of secondary importance to them anyway.
There would still be this guy who, hundreds of years ago, 'split the moon in half' or 'walked on water' or 'levitated', etc. etc. so anyway we should all do whatever he said back then forever and pray to his spirit and/or other related nonsense.

Naomi - //// Some of them refuse believe proven science now - even when the facts are staring them in the face they cling to their superstitious theology - so I doubt they'd believe that either.////
What proven scientific fact you think, I do not believe in Naomi? I won't ask for many, Just give me only one.

Anyone can believe in moon and sun. But why do you believe in love and hate? What do you mean by “morality” and where did you find out about all these?
/////Oh, im not too sure about aliens, maybe, maybe not, there is some compelling tangible evidence to suggest they are here or have been here./////
Yet again you wait for scientists to tell you about it and then believe. I already believe in “life” on other planets because a book written 1400 years ago told me that.
And no one need to be afraid of me when it comes to believe in God or not believe in God. That is your own personal problem.
Now to your question. People will always find something else to fight for. But why are you worried about what others may or may not do. Why don’t you talk about your own self and answer my this question, If it is proved without any doubt by the people who you believe in that God and all others you do not believe in do exist, would be your reaction?

To clarify, by secondary importance I didn't mean that the 'God' wasn't the most important aspect of any religion - indeed in some it is - I meant that the followers just think that it is important, what is actually important for a successful religion is to worship and to follow instructions from something that cannot be disproven - and I thought that the soul of a prophet would fit the bill nicely.
Keyplus90, to answer your question, this is what I think would happen for me: If it was proven that a God existed I would be very surprised and probably extremely excited, it would be a pretty special discovery. I would need to adjust to the fact that everything is actually controlled by another being, and be happy that now that all the bad things in the world are by default 'punishments' and no longer 'faith testers', misfortune will stop happening to good people. I would tell my religous friends that they got lucky then get down to some serious worshipping. Praying would become a big thing in my life, I would do a bit of apologising in the first instance and when he's back onside start dropping in a few hints about some improvements he might like to my life.
