This is usually from non religous people that do not even believe in any form of afterlife This is illogical right? so doesn't this imply that the person would otherwise be in some kind of torment had it not been for these "Kind respectful" words?

If this is meant to be a "mark of respect then wouldn't making up a word or phrase that is better suited a better option?

What if the relatives or friends believe in afterlife punishment, wouldn't this phrase then be disrespectful to them?

Missing something.....?...hmmmm........

Lacking something...? ......almost certainly.
I suspect if such a poll was conducted, most would *disagree* with Belinda...most certainly are,are on this thread.

Maybe we can ask the Ed for a poll......

Disagree with what exactly pastafreak? And a poll would be great idea if it was non biased, you tend to find that interviewing people by themselves tends to get the most honest answers with those in groups tending to give the same answers as not to be seen as the black sheep or to be shunned by their peers for giving an answer that contradicts the group.
Disagree with your personally conducted, " in depth personal study asking a wide range of ages, religions and non religions as well as colour. "

That should have been obvious.
There is a wide range here...and they do not seem to agree with you....but that's because we are all sheep.......

I'm off now... ;-)
RIP is the abbreviation for requiescat in pace, which translates as may he/she rest in peace, and is used all over the world.

Many people use it without thinking of the meaning, and would be mildly amused at the depth of analysis we are applying here.

To be fair, that's the fun of Answerbank. If we all agreed about everything, we'd just be talking about the weather. <[:-)>
We could have a row about that too....

I must admit to challenging the routine RIP I have friends who should have on their gravestones party on forever...

//Naomi no im not in the media (Yet) but influential people are only human and are still within the "Lower classes " grasp if you know where and how to look, mainly it's not what you know but who you know that opens doors. //

Haaaaa! If I used L-O-L as part of my vocabulary, that's exactly what I'd say right now - if you get my drift. ;o)))
Rowan - no offense meant, especially to the Poet Laureate of the First Church of Answerbank!

Could you compose something short and suitable for my gravestone, bearing in mind that I want my ashes scattered at sea, or in deep water? Mwahahaha!

We cast Venator to the wind
To lie like stardust reflected
on the unquiet sea
a true servant of the holy Gnome
For all time at rest is he
This action must be thought out well
for if casting goes awry
Venator will not be ashes strewn
But grit in everyones eye...
belinda, you clearly know it all already from your tone.

Why ask people what they think, when you clearly have a very strong agenda and just shout them down?
you seem to have cloaked an excuse to have a little rant inside a question... and we have all seen that before many times

you keep telling people what they think and mean etc...perhaps your indepth study of hundreds of people (hehe) isnt as thorough as you would like to think because your bias is preventing you actually taking any notice...

well when i say those words i refer to their body, being at rest, that it has stopped and all pain and suffering is gone... i dont not refer to their soul skipping off to heaven on a cloud
lol, because it means rest in peace, simple answer.
