The early Christians were persecuted, even as Jesus had been. (John 15:20; 17:14) Historian John L. von Mosheim called first-century Christians “a set of men of the most harmless inoffensive character, who never harboured in their minds a wish or thought inimical to the welfare of the state.” Dr. Mosheim stated that what “irritated the Romans against the Christians, was the simplicity of their worship, which resembled in nothing the sacred rites of any other people.” He added: “They had no sacrifices, temples, images, oracles, or sacerdotal orders; and this was sufficient to bring upon them the reproaches of an ignorant multitude, who imagined that there could be no religion without these. Thus they were looked upon as a sort of atheists; and, by the Roman laws, those who were chargeable with atheism were declared the pests of human society.”

How can someone be religious by nature? Surely what you're describing is obsessive, and yes some are to different degrees, and in most circumstances high levels of obsession can be destructive.

A moral code is present in all human societies. Whether they wish to admit it or not, all peoples feel a need for a guiding force above and beyond themselves. They instinctively look to a higher power to worship or serve. It may be the sun, the moon, a star, a mountain, a river, an animal, a man, or an organization. Their moral code may be set forth in one of the many sacred writings of different cultures. The need is found in people everywhere. It is instinctive in man.
I read this quote recently in a magazine and I feel it sums it all up
Quote [Dr. Kevin S. Seybold calls it “the seemingly universal tendency of humans to worship something.” ]

The Romans loved new religions, and there were lots of them around.
Few Romans could embrace Judaism, as it neccessitated adult circumcision!
Christianity offered the Abrahamic tradition, with a charismatic leader and the force of a new movement.
no wonder the established Jewish authorities were fiercely opposed, and fomented the persecution.
