No ummmm - he very briefly was in my life, and he soured it massively. I was a barmaid in a theatre where he appeared. He was totally obnoxious.
We can't all be lovely all of the time.

He soured life?
One Swallow doesn't make a summer!
Possibly like your timing? Might be an idea to leave this one now, sasskins, rather than court any controversy as a new member.
I have heard that about many comedians - a barrel of fun on stage and right miserable sods when they are off stage. They appear to be able to paste a smile on with no effort, but then that's what actors do isn't it. Act. And yes, I have heard this about Frank Carson.

ttfn - I am not a new member - I have a new ID, with Ed's blessing of course.
It is quite refreshing to see someone say something that isn't sycophantic when someone has died. I absolutely detest it when people say things like "he was such a lovely man" when they probably only ever saw televised appearances. I am with sasskins on this, Carson was not a nice man, his dying does not change my opinion of him.
Most people when they die are lauded as being wonderful- its simple human nature for their families and those that loved them to do that. The actualy truth is that we all have negative points and some of us are downright nasty. those that dn't love us can't get why everyone's being all tea and sympathy when a horrible git pop's their clogs. You had a bad experience with him, so you're in the latter catagory, which isn't a particularly big deal in my book, you'r entitled to think he was a jerk, but some people on here will have his stage persona in their heads and get upset with you, so as long as your cool with that you're obviously entitled to your opinion.
For the record I think more people will celebrate than mourn me when I suff it, but that's just the way things are, try not to let anyone ' sour' your life sassy- no-one has that right.
I just don't understand how people can have an opinion unless they knew him on a personal level.

Meeting him in a bar is not knowing him.
new member or not this user should surely be treated like everyone else. Maybe could have been worded different like 'although he made people laugh in public, i met him once and he wasnt very nice' people always have a different life behind closed curtains. I watched a documentary about that guy with the fez (sorry total brainblock this morning) and although he made people laugh he was a very violent man. Infact ive found lots off 'funny men' are.
and it doesnt mean he wasnt a nice man just means you saw his bad side.
I'm off to work
If sasskins worked in the theatre bar she would have met him multiple times ummmm, she may not have known him as a friend but would have spent enough time in his presence to know whether he was pleasant to folks or not. You have worked bars so surely you had regulars who you knew quite a lot about that others didn't.

Uuuumm _ I didn't meet him in a bar - he chose to come into the bar after his performance. He then targeted me (a lowly barmaid) as the butt of his cheap jokes. I was earning a crust for my family. He had no excuse.
-- answer removed --
In this context, I knew a family with six children. The father was a brute, down the pub every night back to beat up the wife and kids. They must have breathed a sigh of relief when he deserted them and went off with another woman. When he died and I read the obits I could not believe it. You would have thought he was a miracle husband and father who could do no wrong. Only those who knew him knew the truth. People will believe what they want.
I am a bolshy b1tch and if he had targeted me in that way I would have loudly put him in his place. Sometimes my mouth overtakes my brain and I would probably have got myself sacked. lol
