When you sit away from the computer, with the t.v and radio off in a quiet and serene place, what exactly do you really truly believe happens when you die?

I think the end is nothing. The concept of 'nothing' is very hard for the human brain to imagine, I'm actually not sure we can envision nothing.

I was raised a catholic by my parents, although I refused to make my confirmation. Looking back, I can say with confidence that I have never believed in God.

Yes. Death is simply a part of the way things are on this planet. Life is created naturally and, for a variety of reasons, that life stops. The constituent parts of the dead return to the planet either through natural decay or burning. This process is no different for anything on the planet.

I'm going to split this questions answers into different groups to let everyone have their full point of view put across so will be starting firstly with those of you that think when we die that's it.

You could call this a sub answer but it's all relative.

Does the fact that ( As you believe ) when we die that's it scare you or fill you with sadness that it's the end of the line and no chance to live any lost dreams, no chance to see family, friends or places ever again or have you come to terms with this fact?

It would be nice to think that I am so important, I can 'go on' after death.

But I'm not going to spend my life disappointed that there will be a final end to my existence.

There's little doubt in my mind that humans will achieve immortality. Dying is a process created by the body itself. In essence, our body kills us over time. This process is built into the genome and, bit by bit, we are learning how it works. We already know how to switch off other parts of the genome to prevent the development of hereditary disease, so this is a logical extrapolation.

i'm not going to tell any falsehood and respond either positively or negatively to any of the questions, the simple matter is .. that i have never given these issues any thought - maybe i should once in a while.
but at the momennt i remain open minded on all such issues.

that last bit right there is the cause of all the problems -

the human inability to accept that it is in fact just the end... that when we die, thats it, no more - just like every other living thing that dies - we dont carry on in a lovely fluffy happy world with all our favourite people and things around us - we just end - and many humans cannot and will not accept that - so they cooked up all this heaven garbage, because it was nicer to believe that, than the reality...

also easier to explain to wide eyed children when they ask where granddad has gone...

I always wonder what actually makes the human body 'work'. Frankenstein puns aside, why cant a human be constructed out of healthy parts and given life?

I'm torn between thinking we slip into darkness and believing we come to exist in another form. I catagorically do not believe what I was brought up to believe as a Roman Catholic because I have witnessed too much death and hate to ever believe that any caring God cold ever possibly exist. I'm a sort of Pagan agnostic believing in the power of the planet and nature and mankind rather than in any God or Goddess as a personification. That being said I can appreciate them as a focal point for people's energy direction.

Jackthehat is on the right lines. I've always believed we, the human race are not important enough to have an eternal life, whatever that means. We are extremely arrogant in assuming that by living a certain way on this earth we will spend eternity in wondrous splendour. Another assumption by some people I know, seems to be that we will know when we are dead, that I find very strange.

The reality is no one knows what happens until we die of course. whether there is a Heaven/Hell, reincarnation, a spirit or just simple nothingness, we dont really know. sometimes Its easier to believe in the more "realistic" idea rather than seeming gullable for believing in something else.

I do believe death itself can be peaceful, I have seen a relative pass away whilst still holding a sandwich, this would suggest that it was both quick and painless.
