There were similar arguements when women were first made priests and a number of men vicars left C of E to join the RC. Some claim that both churches gained by that . It was said that those that left were RC at heart anyway.
You may remember the Pope made quite an effort to get them into his fold.

Apparently not, it would seem.
Just been on the news that yet again the Synod has voted against it.
Ethandron.....you are correct.

Borat was right you know..... Some women have brains the size of squirrels.

Hang on....I've just had a thought. If women are away Bishoping, whose going to do the washing-up ?
well the antis have won - did you see the name of the anti-advancement Laity spokesman, deliciously one "Emma Forward"? How ironic.
Does she have a friend named Evita Way?
ael.. I have no problem with that.

I'm not surprised as the laity seem more intense than the clerics themselves. It is the laity who seem to need the crutch of the supernatural and think the bible is factual whilst the clerics see it more as a philosophy.
If somebody could please tell me what a Bishop actually does then I shall pass judgement on whether I think a mere woman is up to the task. Thanks.
Haven't the Anglicans already had women bishops for years?

About time the rest got real and moved with the times.
Of the seven traditional sacraments of the church five can be administered by a priest ( one can even be administered by a layman in an emergency) but two, confirmation and ordination are restricted to bishops.
Next you will be wanting a female Prime Minister and a female Monarch.
I really really think that the lay women who are against it are the ones who believe they run the parishes now and see themselves being disempowered by ordained women.
Nice point woofgang.

Is the church in touch? Only in the rugby sense of the word.

woofgang According to several interviewees it is not the grass root parishioners who objected, it is those who get themselves elected into the laity . They are a bit like the shop stewards who supposedly talk for the members. They are the pushy intense ones . It was this laity synod whose rejection vote caused the motion to fail.

I believe not in the UK but there are women bishops all over the world from New Zealand to Africa.

Apart from sandy none of our ABer theists have joined the thread.
I wonder why.
As long as they can only move diagonally I can't see a problem !
indeed modeller and that was part of my point. I was also commenting about female parishioners that I have seen interviewed. I would call myself a "theist" in that I believe in god but I wouldn't say that I was a practicing member of the church of england.
I believe the other theists who haven't replied to this thread may be of a mind with Dr Johnson when he said: "Sir, a woman's preaching is like a dog's walking on his hind legs. It is not done well: but you are surprised to find it is done at all."
