Bible ...

There are many who take the word of this book literally and believe every word, but there are numerous examples of things supposedly said in it, that are so utterly ingrained in our world, that we would be shocked to discover that they were never actually said in it!
having never actually read the bible, i cannot swear to this but i have heard there are many - such as the apple - apparently there is no apple mentioned in the bible - yet, the world in general thinks it is
also i read somewhere yeasterday that there is no mention of '3 wise men' in the bible... we have apparently cooked that up in nativity plays and its stuck.
so, can anyone verify these, and can anyone give me any more examples?
i imagine there are many more.
i find it interesting, and its a perfect example of how people can become so mislead and so convinced by the words of other people, people have basically made stuff up, and others have blindly believed something that they never check.
its kind of like chinese whispers.
thanks

We should not be mean to a person just because you think he was mean to you . But what if someone tries to pick a fight with you? He may try to get you angry by calling you names. He may laugh at you and say that you’re scared. Suppose he calls you a coward. What should you do? Should you let yourself get into a fight?
Again, let’s see what the Bible says. Turn to Matthew chapter 5, verse 39. There Jesus says: “Do not resist him that is wicked; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other also to him.” What do you think Jesus meant by that? Did he mean that if someone hits you with his fist on one side of your face, you should let him hit you on the other side?
No, Jesus did not mean that at all. A slap is not like a hit with the fist. It is more like a push or a shove. A person may slap us to pick a fight. He wants us to get angry. And if we get angry and we push or shove back, what happens?— We will probably get into a fight.
But Jesus did not want his true followers to get into fights. So he said that if someone slaps us, we should not slap him back. We should not become angry and get into a fight. If we do, we show that we are no better than the one who started the fight.

goodlife - he says turn the other cheek ...
..they says and eye for an eye ...
so where did the orginal and first copy of the bible come from if not man made? did it float down from heaven on a cloud?
and regarding morality - if you are only good for fear of god, and in the hope of getting into heaven - then you are not truly good = good deeds done under threat and fear of gods wrath are not genuine.
only people who do good - for no other reason than they want to - no threats, no fear of hell, no desire to earn a place in heaven - are truly good in their heart and soul.
by that definition goodlife - you are not a good person.

Even the bastions of christianity all agree that the Bible was written by men, historians agree that it was written scoes and centuries after the events.
So you say men of the 2/3/4 century were sane in hearing the voice of god? It makes not a jot against what you say, its not even anecdotal its your opnion, of what amounts to chinese whispers. It is along the lines of me trying to write a biography of Thomas Tenison based on the recollections of Naomi, Joko & Ratter, who will, in turn, asked others.
It cannot be A) the truth B) Above all the word of god.

True Christians are not driven into their faith by fear. (1 Corinthians 13:13)
Our faith is not in men or in the wisdom of men. (Prov. 17:24)
Our faith will become stronger if we persist in pursuing the course that God’s Word sets out for all Christians. (Matthew 24:13)
Faith is not mere belief; it must be proved by works or actions. (JAS. 3:13)
But yes, faith is not a possession of all people. (2 Thess. 3:2)
If you can get away with it, who cares?” is the attitude of the majority. However, Jehovah’s witnesses hold that the Bible is the Word of God and that the moral code set out in the Scriptures is the proper and right one to follow.

Naomi @ No, This depends on whether you he gets the sense of it. This is shown many times by Jesus, who, referred to “the one hearing the word and getting the sense of it, who really does bear fruit and produces, this one a hundredfold, that one sixty, the other thirty. (Matt. 13:23)
Davethedog @ Faith is not just a thing of the past that prechristian people showed, but something that Christians must display now. In the face of all the modern ideas, scientific knowledge and theories taught today, we can always say as Jesus did, Its is written, (Matt 4:4) in God words the Holy Bible, and not man word.

Goodlife, apart from talking nonsense, and copying and pasting, nonsense, you are insulting people - constantly. You have no idea how people here live, you have no idea what they do for charity and for other people, and you have no idea of their moral code. Get your own house in order - and for 'house' read brain!
Naomi@ Those who assert that they are wise often come up with conclusions like -There is no God or -The Bible is not to be trusted or -These are not the last days. Such ideas are just as foolish in God’s eyes as concluding that “2=1.” (1 Corinthians 3:19) Whatever authority people may arrogate to themselves, I do not have to accept their conclusions if they contradict God, ignore his Word, and violate common sense. In the final analysis, the wise course is always to “let God be found true, though every man be found a liar.”—Romans 3:4.
jno is right re the wise men. No number is given, only the number of gifts. It was in mediaeval times that they became kings and were given the wonderful names of Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, and were linked to India, Persia and Arabia. These later became Asia, Africa and Europe - representing the whole of humanity as understood at the time. That's why the three kings are often depicted as being of different ethnic groups on Christmas cards.
It's basically Christian folklore as opposed to Christian scripture. And that's where the Chinese whispers thing happens, as folklore is basically passed on by word of mouth.
As for the apple, that was the most familiar fruit to Europeans in mediaeval times, so was used in depictions of the Garden of Eden.

Can we get right down to basics here ? Jesus was a devout and (mostly) observant Jew. He was extremely well versed in the hebrew scriptures, and had no intention of altering them or adding to them. He never asked people to stop being jews and follow him and create a new religion. If he came again, he would have no idea what was going on in a Christian church. The new testament would be all Greek to him. Literally - it was a language he did not speak.

And this shows everyone what a closed mind you have, unreceptive to any reality but the one you create through the engine of your faith.
We come up with conclusions like "There is no god", or "the bible is just made up stuff" because there is no evidence to support such assertions, no proof, and it is simply illogical to belief in magic without any evidence to support it! Add to that the increasing body of cross discipline evidence that shows that a supernatural being is simply not required for creation to occur, and you are back to reason and occams razor.
As far as the bible goes - there is a lot of evidence to show that the bible is essentially a heavily edited book of narrative and myth, tailored to support whichever flavour of religion was deemed to be politically suitable at the time.
And you, and others like you, notably Truthabounds, witter on incessantly about the end times - and you offer as proof your sweeping, unevidenced "proof" which consists of your observations that things are getting worse - But those observations of yours are evidence only of your own confirmation bias - you look around the world and see only what you want to see.
Most of those self-professed atheists and agnostics here will tell you that, were they presented with the right evidence, they could be persuaded to believe. Thats the one thing that you cannot offer - your logic and reason is utterly compromised by your faith, and that is a very sad thing to see.

Chinese whispers are light lies because they speak about what they do not know-- and this is falsifying what is said in the Bible.
In kjv Genesis 3-3 it is fruit and not apple ?
Matthe2--13 --Astrologers ----- not 3 wise men ?
Jonah in the belly of wheal Jonah 2-1-2 the belly of fish ?
Jonah sitting under a fig tree --Jonah 4-6 - bottle-gourd plant.?
