Occam's razor may not lead to the right answer all the time but it still tends to guide the way science moves. Elsewhere I seem to recall you not being a fan of Supersymmetry. Maybe it's still wrong but in some senses it's the "simplest" solution to certain problems. Well, simple in a sort of way.
Goodlife, you clearly have a warped view of the Universe since it's anything but perfect and "Just right". A quick glance through the history of the earth will show that its position has varied, the composition of its atmosphere has varied, the Moon is gradually moving away from the Earth, we get hit by asteroids all the time and maybe it would have been nice if God had tidied that up, huh?
Not that you'll pay any attention, of course. But people who see the glory of God everywhere they look are wearing rose-tinted spectacles.

joko, //since the default state is really to believe nothing,// Really! then why has every society, since the beginning of homo sapiens arrival on earth believed in something bigger than themselves? (as do a majority of the world's population today). A question to which I'm sure you will respond by saying, "because they were, and are, all more stupid than I am".
no khandro - obviously you don't understand the word 'default', in this circumstance
they didn't just come out of the womb believing in something did they?
they 'came' to believe over time, through being told things, copying others, learning etc ... our 'default' setting is not to believe anything.
believing is a conscious decision ...

doctordb; Linguistically, there is nothing wrong with 'the arrival of homo-sapiens', one could use the word 'advent' but it means the same. However you are correct in saying that beliefs are acquired, I have said nothing to contradict that.
joko; Please re-read my post and you will see I refer to society (of homo-sapiens). Society does not "come out of the womb".

Khandro, I was trying to point out that words like 'arrival' and 'since the beginning' give a false impression of a moment in our evolutionary history that took many thousands of years to occur. In that time myriad beliefs were invented and abandoned as they are today and will be on the future.
Your agreement that belief is acquired would seem to also align with joko's view that non-belief is the default setting.

doctordb; But there was such a moment when homo-sapiens arrived; according to the latest anthropological/genetic studies, the arrival/advent (call it what you will) took the form of one female on the African Savannah from whom we are all descended. In using the word 'default' I thing you are hanging yourself by your own petard, presupposing as it does that there is something in existence which is being defaulted on, perhaps you mean innocence.
Despite our education and the advances in science .
There will always be things we don't understand.
There will always be events that are inexplicable.
This creates a void in our minds which needs to be filled.
This void is for many the belief in an invisible ,imaginary deity.
Around this deity is woven myths and legends to give it some substance.
For many this satisfies their need to fill the void.
Others need it as a crutch to cope with life.
Atheists also like to fill the void in their knowledge but they require facts not fantasy.
khandro - i have reread it, and what you have pointed out makes even less sense.
yes many societies have believed in gods etc - but that's irrelevant to the point i made - as every single one of those societies created it - they invented it, and every single one of them taught it to each new child
every person, until they were taught about gods etc - believed in nothing
people have to be persuaded to believe in god.
that is what 'default' means in this situation - the basic start position
much like a brand new computer only has the basics on it until you start to change it and install all the things you want it to do ...

very true MT - greatest magician and confidence trickster who walked the earth.
on one hand, i'd begrudgingly admire him for pulling off the greatest, most astonishing feat of world domination anyone has ever achieved.
he clearly has skills people can only dream of.
so i'd shake his hand for that - then i'd rip it off and beat him to death with the stump for his horrendous crime to humanity.
