The choice of the pope is meant to be by God which is why all those Cardinals pray for guidance before voting. But the last one God chose has resigned.
So, has God changed his mind or is he not omniscient after all and didn't see this coming? And why do they have to have several votes? Is God a ditherer? Strange fellow this chap that some people worship.

I can sense from your question a lot of sarcasm.

But I think most of us know there is no "god" and that organizations like the Catholic Church are just giant con artists, no better than the people who try to scam us with "dodgy" emails.

They "pretend" they have access to god, encourage people to give them money (to get a quicker route to heaven), and in the meanwhile their priests abuse people who they are supposed to be looking after.

I am surpised so many people still follow the catholic faith, to me it was discredited years ago.

God never changes his mind...everything that happens is according to his plan. This is only possible because he doesn't exist, If he did exist we wouldn't, because there wouldn't have been any evolution (unless it was part of his plan to save a lot of work)

Naw, God always intended the last pope to have a caretaker role. It's you who assumed he'd be another 'for life' pope.

They have serveral votes to get the majority they need. Not all voters get God's instructions from the off.

It would make more sense to draw the name out of a lottery machine.

That way you could be sure it was god doing the choosing and not a one or more cardinals misinterpreting the divine guidance from above.
It would save alot of time too.

Apparently so. Mr.Ratzinger felt that he could no longer keep a straight face when he preached the word so he had a chinwag with the big man upstairs and JC gave him a way out instead of blowing out his candle.

I feel all the pompous ceremonies and voting procedure is felt necessary to somewhat justify the vast amounts of donated money that followers gave to the Church.

Surely God would tell the person involved that he was to be pope, that person would then come forward and exclaim! "I am the new pope sent by god!"

How could that be disputed?
