I wouldn’t say that the poppy symbol necessarily invokes notions of religion. Many people wear poppies simply in remembrance, and as a respectful tribute, to those who have given their lives for this country. The most poignant part of any remembrance ceremony is the reading of lines from Binyon’s poem ‘For the Fallen’, with not a mention of prayer or religion.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
That says it all.
