whilst out yesterday i saw some men and women dressed in a way you rarely see, i concluded these were Orthodox Jews going on past experience, however i wondered the following, without resorting to google, what is the point behind the type of dress for the men, and the extraordinary hat that one chap one wearing, not the over large fedora type i have seen often, but a round birds nest type creation, i can't think of a way to describe it, other than post a link
looking at them, it was like seeing the other side of Islam, if you understand what i mean

i hope someone responds as i am genuinely interested, though i read an article that was more disturbing than anything on sexual abuse within the communities, rife and not talked about for fear of ostracism, this rather shocked me i must say

thanks, however if anyone knows the history behind them, i am also interested, is this taken from places they have lived say in Russia, the chaps headgear wasn't quite like the kolpik, similar, but more extreme

do you think they are the twin of Islam, the rigidity of their faith, the dress codes, the same sense of right, and having read the article, i am not sure to link it - on child sexual abuse written by a rabbi, it makes me wonder at any religion with such views, and strict codes of behaviour.

Islam is fundamentally an imitation of Judaism, hence the two are very similar in many respects.

so it would seem, i confess i find the dress code as strange as the Islamic faithful, harking back thousands of years, as though they need to hold on to these traditions as an affirmation of their faith. They seem as divided in their views as Islam, so the heads and tails of the same coin

I was under the impression that Christianity, Islam and Judaism came from the same common source so shared many ideals.

When mentioning silly hats, child abuse and religion in one sentence I tend to think of a different religious sect.

Iggy, they do all come from the same common source, the oldest being Judaism. However, whilst Christianity can be said to be a direct off-shoot of Judaism the same cannot be said for Islam.

Emmie, He’s well-known for his work against child abuse. Ironic though that the bath house he mentions is in the Mea She’arim district of Jerusalem. There it is not unknown for married couples walking along the street to have stones thrown at them simply for holding hands. Such is the hypocrisy of religion.

A somewhat sweeping statement! Attacks by predatory males on children are as much against the law in Brooklyn as they are in Brixton, and have nothing to do with Judaism whether they take place in a bathhouse or anywhere else. The Rabbi should have reported the rape to the police authorities.

did you read the whole piece, anyone reporting matters will be ostracised, shunned, never spoken to again, according to the rabbi in question, its endemic. So perhaps its not so sweeping a statement. I confess that i have no time for any religion, and not just because i think that paedophiles lurk there.

Khandro, religions are obsessed with sex because it enables them to control people and orthodox judaism seems to be no better than many others in this respect.
