A question for people who believe what preachers/teachers of religion tell them.
Regardless of creed, why do you think they know any more about God and the supernatural than you do when you each have exactly the same information at your disposal – none of which can be authenticated?
I think someone touched on it above, for many the rudiments of Religion were taught to us in our early years and as such we trusted that the person who had lived the longest knew more than we did as small children - that is we had respect and trust in our elders.
As we grow, we realise that we can question and challenge - whether it be religious matters or any other subject, without being disrespectful but having the wisdom of years to be sceptical.
The difference with learning other subjects, is that you can ask questions and get answers. History may be one-sided, depending on who has recorded it, but facts in all subjects are verifiable. Except with religion.
I've asked many questions about religion, including on AB and have never yet had an answer that makes any sense to me (not from a religious person, anyway) and everything about religious beliefs can be explained by physics and psychology.
Yes sandy- psychology (or psychiatry perhaps). People make mistakes, misinterpret and misunderstand things all the time. Along with a Chinese whispers effect...
Great question? I disagree. It is another random why question designed to get believers to explain/justify their beliefs. These answers can then be dissected and rejected. More a sport than a real wish to know.
I would love to know. I'm always interested in why people think as they do. If religion doesn't stand up to any scrutiny- that doesn't say much for it.
I am reading a journal written by my great grandfather in 1881, one of the entries was that he had been to the Noncomformist Chapel that day and he was complete in his faith in Jesus and the love he felt for Him and all his family.
He doesn't appear to be an bible basher in any other part of his journal, but that simple faith of his made me pause to reconsider my idea of him. His son -my grandfather was a rough man a wife-beater and my father hated him. Of course nothing can be authenticated concerning ones belief in stories of an invisible entity, any more than those of you who cannot imagine a power beyond your own.
