I think feelings of insecurity are a factor that might drive a person to seek answers in religion, so in that sense, yes maybe there are more insecure atheists than insecure religionists. It's the price non-believers have to pay for dealing with reality as it is rather than finding comfort in the embrace of a fictitious alternative.

Sandy, you say that at the heart of much atheism is arrogance, but surely the real arrogance lies with the people who think they’re special enough for a supernatural entity to take a personal interest in everything they do?
The religious are prone to accusing atheists of insecurity, but none as yet has been able to explain why they say that.

sandyRoe, Milvus and Khandro are the latest exponents of that accusation … see here:

…. neither of whom has offered an explanation. Milvus has remained silent, but what Khandro may have thought was a snappy response to this question was, in fact, a quote from an actress who, according to Wiki, is best known for a role in ‘Desperate Housewives’ (what’s that?), so it turned out to be pretty toothless. 'Hello!' magazine? Just a guess.

Yes, to the paranoiac OP question; I quoted late Thursday, 'With any kind of mean girl, or anyone who bullies anyone, there's always a reason for it. There is that sadness in them or insecurity that makes them feel like they need to act out or hurt other people.' - nothing to do with atheism, but about insecurity in general.
Early the next morning (yesterday) a friend I rode the first 100 km of the cycle path along the River Danube from Donaueschingen to Sigmaringen in perfect weather, - absolute bliss.
Returning late in the evening, I looked at my emails and found, unbelievably, this stupid thread had been continuing throughout the day, - some of you really should get out more.
To be clear, I have not said 'atheists are insecure', and whether they are or not is of absolutely no importance to me, and further, I have met representatives of every major religion in the world, and I don't remember the subject of 'atheist insecurity' ever looming large, or in fact, even having been touched upon.
Vaya con Dios.

We seem to have an awful lot of atheist on AB, but what i can never understand is the fact that when someone enters a thread regarding the death of a celebrity etc, these same atheist queue up to add their comments and then finish with those three letters RIP.
Why, if they don't believe in an afterlife where do they think the deceased will be resting?
