"The proportion of the population who identify as having no religion – referred to as “nones” – reached 48.5% in 2014, almost double the figure of 25% in the 2011 census. Those who define themselves as Christian – Anglicans, Catholics and other denominations – made up 43.8% of the population"
Us Atheists appear to be in the ascendance. Anybody surprised by this ?

I think that more people are turning away from religion because we are much brighter than we used to be. Although there will always be those indoctrinate d into a religion or need it for the feel good factor it is supposed to give but there is a growing band that think for themselves and modern life has made us more synicel about all forms of authority. Ummm...old habits die hard !
Talking of habits......I was taught by a series of Nuns, up until I went to my Secondary Modern School, at age 11. I have been an atheist since I was in my late teens but if I see a Nun rattling a collecting tin at Xmas, I find myself averting my gaze, and reaching into my pocket for a coin or two entirely automatically !
I also still have the memories of being hit over the knuckles by Nuns, when I got something wrong at school !
