Islam Again The Spark For Violence?
52 Answers
Throughout Europe far right extremists are giving voice to the fear that ordinary reasonable people have in the face of Muslim violence. The latest a drive by shooting in Italy. Not condoning it, but understanding the fear and frustration of masses of people who feel unprotected by politically correct politicians. Plenty of news clips on YouTube to articulate this. Would it not be better if we had politicians with the bells to confront Islam head on and begin deporting the aliens, closing down mosques, and cutting off the money supply to Muslim institutions and so called, "Community Leaders?"
They do love their community leaders don't they? As democratic as a pack of wolves.

But politics has been at the heart of Islam since the Prophet established his power base in Medina, Kidas? Have you heard of the concepts "House of Peace" and "House of War"?

//as a biologist - Diversity is our strength. - how true ! how true ! clonal white mice dont do well in the wild - altho OK in the lab. Unable to meet challenges for which they havent been bred....so diversity may be strength - //
And as a sociologist, or even just a civilised human being, what's your comment on cultural diversity? "We kill poofters here". "Little girls shouldn't have clits".
"How true, how true" - is that what you think?

Who are you kidding Kidas?
You quote a lot of what Christianity, Jesus and the Bible taught us, why not quote some of what Islam, Allah and the Koran teaches them?
/// they are law-abiding people who feel increasingly isolated by unchristian intolerance such as you demonstrate. ///
It is not our unchristian intolerance that isolates them, it is them themselves who prefer to isolate themselves.
/// Be aware that 99% of Muslims disown the terrorists. ///
I don't know where you got that figure from, but then you wouldn't expect many to admit to supporting terrorists.
/// Try turning the other cheek. Try treating others as you would wish to be treated yourself. ///
I think that is what we have been doing for far too long, only to being rewarded by being kicked in that other cheek.

Hi V_T
Yes, I have heard of those. I don't pretend to be an Islamic scholar. I don't speak arabic, for a start.
As I understand it those English words are translations of ambiguous arabic words that could also be translated as the House of the West (those Crusaders who came to wage war on Islam in te 11th/12th century). Furthermore, they do not appear in versions of the Koran/Qu'ran prior to the 20th century.
Because I'm no scholar of Islam, I'm not going to try and discuss what I don't know. It may be that you know better.
What I do know is that there are many Islam-hate sites that use those words to spread fear and hatred.
What I also know is that the Muslims I know completely disavow terrorism.
What I also know is that when that man Darren Osborne drove his rented van at speed into a crowd of worshippers, the religious leader prevented the congregation from hurting the man who had sought to kill them.
What I also know is that the newspapers and hate sites in this country have sought to spread fear and division in this country.
It's a long read, and you may get bored, but try this series of four articles for a start:

//I mean what have the Arabs ever done for us?
invention of zero ...algebra...algorithms - alcohol...all the words beginning wivda letter AL...zeniths and azimuths ?//
The science was Indian, Greek and Roman. The labels were Arabic. More self-confident then, see, being in control Saw the value in the scientific knowledge they'd stumbled on by conquest. And all those Greek, Jewish, Persian and Indian scholars to perpetuate it and translate it into God's own language.
Now please comment on Islam's contribution to modern science. You could use Nobel prizes as a yardstick.
I'll spare you the time: zilch.

This I do know:
It was not the Greeks who invented algebra. It was the Arabs.
The greeks had geometry, astronomy (but incomplete), and other -ologies. The Romans contributed almost nothing to scientific or methematical development.
It was the Arab world that started modern understanding of mathematical analysis.
Al- is an arabic word-fragment. Adopted English words beginning al- are in many cases of arabic origin.
Algebra is the most famous. The variable star called Algol is another 'The demon star'). Because it was one of the few stars that varies in brightness in the night sky.
We now know it is a binary star in which the smaller companion orbits in our plane, temporarily obscuring some of the light from the main star.
But I guess this is not really the point.
The point is that people are determined to find danger in something different from themselves, and certain groups are determined to feed and fuel that fear.
I regret that.

In a series of questions on the terror threat in Britain, 4% said they sympathised with people who took part in suicide bombings (1% said they completely sympathised and 3% said they sympathised to some extent), and 4% said they sympathised with people who committed terrorist actions as a form of political protest generally.
However, when asked to what extent they agreed or disagreed that homosexuality should be legal in Britain, 18% said they agreed and 52% said they disagreed, compared with 5% among the public at large who disagreed. Almost half (47%) said they did not agree that it was acceptable for a gay person to become a teacher, compared with 14% of the general population.

//When losing an argument about by faith I often bring up a completely different religion as a diversionary tactic to take the heat off of myself whilst secretly hoping no one mentions the crusades.//
Why would you hope that the crusades weren't mentioned, Jahulaye? Do you know something about them that I don't? Not that I'm claiming to know a lot, just the broad historical context.

//Not every Muslim country has a problem with extremists.//
Leaving that statement aside for a moment, Maggie, I think pretty well most non-Muslim countries with sizeable (3+%) Muslim minorities do have a problem with Muslim extremists, don't they? There may be exceptions.
However, back to your point - can you name any of these extremist-free Muslim-majority countries? It wasn't that long ago people were pointing at Turkey, Malaysia and Indonesia as modern countries with secular democratic institutions and religious tolerance. All three of these countries have seen a shift to Islamic fundamentalism in the last twenty years. Erdogan's Turkey is fast becoming an Islamic state. Whole provinces in Malaysia and Indonesia are now governed by some form of Sharia - bad news for all the non-Muslims in those provinces and that half of the Muslims living there which is female.
