Why do religionists (of all flavours) hate this way of thinking so much?
What is wrong with trying to enjoy this one and only life (that we can be certain of) so much?
We all go through our own personal griefs in life, our own personal problems and struggles, but what is so WRONG about enjoying our existence once in a while?
For me its not about 'eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die'. Its more about eat, drink and be merry for today Im alive. And Im currently enjoying been alive...

genuine Christian ones aren't, ummmm, at least not ones I've seen. But even then they manage to be merry. Some of them even drink, or so I'm told.

Nailit - the fatalism of Christianity dates back to Medieval Times when the clergy held massive wealth, and with it power, and life for ordinary people was hard, brutal and short.

That tended to concentrate the mind on the 'afterlife' and the clergy were quick to exploit the fear of people, and make money and even more power out of it.

Now we are more 'civilised' and life expectancy is well over double, maybe getting n for triple what it was then but the fear has been handed down, so it goes on.

I don't know who you've been speaking to, but the Christians that I know love life and enjoy it to the full. Christ said, Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." I think that's broadly in agreement with living for the "now"- or as they say in AA "Just for Today".

Nailit , go down to visit some of your local church summer fayres (of which there are plenty at this time of year ) and you will see people enjoying themselves , barbecue , bottle stall , raffles , entertainment , dancing and beer (if they are licensed ) .

I don’t believe that does apply to ‘religionists of all flavours’, but then again it depends on your idea of eat, drink, and be merry’. If it’s getting trashed, causing problems for others, and making a fool of yourself, I’m with the religionists who dislike that. There’s nothing wrong with ‘nice’. As benhilton says, the churches have some lovely times. I’ve organised very many functions in aid of our lovely old village church, including fetes (yes, I know, I’m one of those wicked non-believers so who’d a thunk?) and believe me, I’m no shrinking violet. I know how to organise a party! Whether it be a fete, a quiz night, a commemorative or celebratory bash, or anything else, with the food and alcohol in good supply, a guaranteed hoot is always had by all.
