On the basis that Theland can bang on to the point of idiocy about his Christianity, I thought I'd start a Buddhist thread, where I can do the same about the teachings of the Buddha...

There are four Truths.

The First Truth identifies the presence of suffering.

The Second Truth, on the other hand, seeks to determine the cause of suffering.

The Third Noble Truth, the truth of the end of suffering, has dual meaning, suggesting either the end of suffering in this life, on earth, or in the spiritual life, through achieving Nirvana.

The Fourth Noble truth charts the method for attaining the end of suffering, known to Buddhists as the Noble Eightfold Path.

Not sure any of that is controversial, mind.

So basically, all about suffering?!
Question Author
No. The recognition of suffering as being central to life, and the attempt to overcome it.
"So..." Buddhism teaches us to recognise suffering, accept it, control it and then eliminate it ?
Question Author
Yes and no. Study the second truth: "The Second Truth, on the other hand, seeks to determine the cause of suffering."

Determining the cause of the suffering which permeates all life is not that easy!

Simplistically, the Buddhist answer is the 'attachment, clinging, grasping' that is central to most human life, and some animal life. But going further, and recognising the attachment (to belongings, beliefs, partners, everything, ultimately life itself) is difficult. Well, it's fairly easy intellectually, but to recognise and then attempt to discard such attachments in ourselves, now that is the harder 'ask'.

So basically this religion is just as daft as all the others.
A very peaceful religion I believe..people don't tend to berate, hurt or kill those who don't believe in this religion in the name of the Buddha. I am not aware that followers of this religion attempt to force their beliefs down other peoples throats either.........of course I am sure I will be told different.
Buddhists can and will be violent. Nationalist Buddhist monks like Phra Kittiwuttho argued that killing Communists did not violate any of the Buddhist precepts. A quick Google gives loads of info on the militant Buddhist monks.
Just another religion that bends is rules and beliefs when and how it likes for political and economical reasons.

One could argue that lydia’s attachment to her anger is one of the roots of her suffering.
Buddhism isn't a religion, their is no deity. It's a path.. a way of life. You are the deity.
Bainbridg. Personal jibes go completely over my head dear. You obviously have a very high opinion of yourself which would correlate with Spaths opinion on Buddhism that you basically worship yourself.
Question Author
Not a jibe, lydia, just an observation. You chose to come onto this thread and vent your feelings about your perception of Buddhist hypocrisy; I was merely suggesting a way out.
Bainbrig. I have no need to vent my feelings about Buddhism as to be honest I've never given that pathway a second thought. I neither have an interest nor animosity regarding Buddhist values.

I was referring to the fact that although Buddhism tends to be thought of as a peace loving religion, it has its Militants like every other religion or pathway. This was taken from Wiki and I can supply the references if you would like to read the whole article.

Perhaps you did not like the reference to Buddhists killing Communists. That would figure.........

Oh Lydia, you really do like a fight, don’t you.

I don’t.

I strive for agreement, for concorde, even with those who (like you) are metaphorically jumping up and down waving their fists and snarling.

Calm down. I am sure we actually agree on many things.
Its hard to jump up and down fists raging when you are giggling.

Maybe a few cowbells and a couple of " omhs!" might be beneficial and calming for you Bill.

Have a lovely day or do try to that's a good fellow.
I assume AL's post at 10.34 was in response to MallyJ who said this is a very peaceful religion - which isn't necessarily true. AL is right.
Buddists have mistreated Rohingya muslims, causing genocide against them.
