Absurdity Of Hell

Some religions ( and some R&S posters) postulate that hell is a just and final destination for unbelievers.
Apart from the obvious (eternal punishment for finite sins is unjust) can anyone conceive of a more sick doctrine in religion than that unbelievers will be tortured beyond belief...for eternity...for simply believing something different?

All religions have their own ideas of hell but even the Christians that I know have a hard time with this and struggle to cope with it.
(I actually know one Christian who lost his son to drug OD and cracked up after, with the thought that his son was burning in hell)
This idea that people will be tortured/burned for all eternity for the sin of not believing in the right God is one sick doctrine.

Anyone comfortable with the idea of eternal torture?

It is not immoral if I decide to adapt the law of the jungle. Red in tooth and claw.
What moral code should stop me from rape, for my sexual satisfaction, theft for my material satisfaction, and murder to preserve my independence?
How can anybody claim that societal norms are the absolute moral standards?
I may simply reject them.
Only the fear of the rest of society catching me and punishing me, would restrict my so called immoral behaviour.

You are on a different planet from the rest of humanity mate.
Crack on with the belief that its moral to torture people for eternity. Nothing will change you from ur mindset.
Its evil from my point of view.
And if you really believe such *** then you are evil too.
The torture is simply not being in the presence of God.
But if you don't believe in Him. You have nothing to worry about do you? Or do you?
You seem troubled as always.

Try again. Have you not read about how god throws 'unbelievers' into a lake of fire? A bit painful I should imagine.

//But if you don't believe in Him. You have nothing to worry about do you? Or do you? /
According to you I do. (or do you? veiled threats again)

//You seem troubled as always//
Yep, we all have our troubles dont we? But at least I dont threaten you with eternal damnation because you got troubles...

Theland, I never ever wanted to say this but....

grow a pair for gods sakes ;-)

How can you call someone troubled, Theland, when you're battling your own demons?
Question Author
What ummmm said^^^^
Oh dear. As usual this gets insulting and personal.
No need for it.
Hello, Theland.

I, an atheist, do believe in an "absolute" morality, although I've got no idea how to defend that prejudice.

I do, however, know why morality can't be based based on dictat (divine or other). That proposition asserts that it's "right" because it's prescribed by some Well, that makes it "legal" - agree there. But legality and goodness are not synonyms. (only jurists would disagree)

An unanswerable dilemma posed by Plato 2,400 years ago: is it right because the gods say so? or do the gods says so because it's right?

That's why the Olympian gods, Zeus included, were subject to a higher principle - the goddess Ananke - Necessity.
...prescribed by some authority (divine or other)...

got elided
No one has insulted you, Theland.

You can continuously call Nailit troubled etc but when it's mentioned to you you find it insulting and personal? Seriously?

Don't be so precious!!
Question Author
Theland suffers for Jesus obviously....
others suffer because they are unbelievers...................

If there was a section on here called, Unicorns, I would never post on it because I don't believe in them.
Neither would Nailit I suspect.
So why does he spend so much time and effort on God?
He clearly has as much time for God as Unicorns.
Why bother?
Great post VE x

I do not murder and kill people, steal and harm because it's not right, not because i'm afraid of getting caught Theland, I don't do it because I wouldn't wish anyone to do it to me or my loved ones because it's not morally right. Morals have nothing whatsoever to do with religion necessarily.
Question Author
Theland,
Because as Ive mentioned many times (and you have wilfully ignored) its because I care about truth, facts and reality.

Question Author
Theland, I really didn't want to have to say this, BUT...
I actually think that you are ill. I don't mean to be mean but you are definitely displaying signs of some kind of paranoia/schizophrenia
Seriously, Im concerned about you.
Amen to that, Nailit!!
Insulting? "Grow a pair?" Yeah right!
Question Author
Theland,
If you can honestly say that torturing people (and torturing them for eternity at that) is either moral or justified then you are either psychollogicaly ill or a psycopath. Either way you are mentally ill and need some help my friend.
At least I won't be cold.
Nailit. Really. Why do you bother?
You don't believe so you are fine eh?
