"Basically, people who aren't Christians are free to believe whatever they like, however stupid!" I absolutely agree with you there, Jim. And why shouldn't they? Haven't we all been given free choice to believe whatever we want?
"And what about all the people who died before Jesus was even born?" I have already stated my belief that God will be infinitely fair, and people will be judged according to the light they had. When Christ died and worked the great work of redemption, those who put their faith in him (the dying thief being the first one, and millions since) will be saved eternally.
"Where did their souls go? What about Adam and Eve? Did they make it to heaven? If so, how did they manage it?" Your desire to find the truth is inspiring, Jim- why don't you start some threads on these questions? My personal belief is simply what the Bible states. We are not told whether Adam or Eve turned to God in repentance, but if they did, they will surely make it to heaven.
"And what about Deuteronomy 14:2? Or doesn't the Old Testament count?" You are speaking of the Jews, as God's chosen people, I take it? Jesus came in as the Messiah of the Jews, and those who accepted Him will find eternal salvation. Of those who reject Christ, the Bible says, "And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. " Hope this helps your understanding.

In reply to Atheist:
"It seemed to me that Jesus was the only way according to your bible quote." Yes, that is what the Bible states. Jesus Himself said, " I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
"How do you square that with your answer to me? (You sound to me to have more humane views than the bible). Thanks, Atheist! As a Christian, I would try (in very small measure) to show the same humanity as the Lord Jesus Himself showed- I see no contradiction between the Bible and my replies, although I am very conscious of my clumsiness and poorly expressed views. Very best wishes

The only way we can be reconciled to God is through Jesus Christ. The message of Christmas (even if it wasn't 25 December) is that God was born into this world as a baby. God became fully human so He could identify with what it is like to be human.
Christianity isn't really a religion it is rather a living relationship with God through Jesus

fiveleaves; I put the question to Spungle "If we can only be saved through Jesus, what about all those who don't know him?"
From his answers and from reading your post above, it seems that perhaps you can be saved through Jesus without realising it, or possibly even if you reject the bible as truth. If that's possible, then it's good news for billions of creatures in the past and future and on earth or elsewhere in the universe.

To answer your question, Atheist is beyond my theological skills. The best I can do, I think is to direct you to the first two chapters of the book of Romans where the subject of God's judgement is dealt with in some depth.
I will just quote Romans 1v20 although the whole chapter needs to be read carefully "For since the creation of the world His (God's) invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse"
Its important to remember that Jesus's victory covers the past, present and future so that righteous, faithful OT characters such as Moses, David, Samuel etc can be saved.
I dont believe there is life anywhere else in the universe although I wont categorically rule it out.

Don't mean to be contentious here but some of these replies from believers make no sense whatsoever to me
(And apologies to fiveleaves for only quoting him/her. Just picking the most recent)
1) //The only way we can be reconciled to God is through Jesus Christ//
(Almost) every religion claims that it is the only way to God. What makes yours any different?
2) //The message of Christmas (even if it wasn't 25 December) is that God was born into this world as a baby//
Many Pre-Christian religions had a theology of God becoming human, Virgin births etc.
Again what makes yours any different? (Are you even aware of them?)
3) //God became fully human so He could identify with what it is like to be human//
So is God omniscient or not?
Why would an all-knowing being have to become something to experience being something?
4) //Christianity isn't really a religion it is rather a living relationship with God through Jesus//
(Almost) all religions claim to have a relationship with God through/by whatever means. Christianity is no exception.
5) //I will just quote Romans 1v20 although the whole chapter needs to be read carefully "For since the creation of the world His (God's) invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse"//
I have read that passage many times and still have no idea what Paul was talking about. Just how are God's 'invisible' attributes clearly seen? What ARE Gods invisible attributes anyway?
Again, im not been contentious here, these are some of the questions I asked as a believer myself.

Every body faces a succession of probable futures, an array of possible futures, and a conflict over preferable futures.Of course, no one can know the future in any absolute sense. We can only systematize and deepen our assumptions and attempt to assign probabilities to them.
But the Bible writers did not simply assign probabilities to assumptions about the future. Nor can their predictions be dismissed as obscure statements open to a wide variety of interpretations. On the contrary, many of their prophecies were uttered with extraordinary clarity and were unusually specific, oftentimes predicting just the opposite of what you might expect

People have said that they believe in evolution because it is based on science whereas belief in God is based on faith.
Many hold this view. But it is good for you to keep this in mind: No matter what someone believes about God or about evolution, some type of faith is involved.
None of us have seen God or observed something being created. (John 1:18) And no human—whether he is a scientist or not—has observed one kind of life evolve into another kind. No one has watched a reptile evolve into a mammal, for example. Even Job ask that question (Job 38:1, 4)
So, all of us must examine the evidence and use our thinking ability to reach sound conclusions. Regarding creation, the apostle Paul wrote: “[God’s] invisible qualities are clearly seen from the world’s creation onward, because they are perceived by the things made, even his eternal power and Godship, so that they are inexcusable.”—Rom. 1:20. So don't look to man for answer. The Bible has all the answers.

Atheist -But know this, that in the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, 3 having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, 4 betrayers, headstrong, puffed up with pride, lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, 5 having an appearance of godliness but proving false to its power; and from these turn away. 6 From among these arise men who slyly work their way into households and captivate weak women loaded down with sins, led by various desires, 7 always learning and yet never able to come to an accurate knowledge of truth.(2 Tim 3:1-7)

Goodlife, // Is there anything in this scripture that you don't see happening today?//
Is there anything in that scripture that hasn’t always applied to mankind? Full marks to the writers for observation. Nothing changes.
//Regarding creation, the apostle Paul wrote://
Evolution wasn’t a consideration for Paul - in his day it was unheard of. Had he had the benefit of greater knowledge I wonder what he might have written?

BBC Radio 4 are broadcasting extracts of John Barton's book A History of the Bible. One of his comments is that people often take quotes from the Bible out of context to justify their point of view.
