Today, yet again, when ABers raise issues that touch on religion, they are confronted by a barrage of bile, ridicule and condescension. It is a measure of those who do so that they can only engage in insults, many of them highly personal. I don't recall any of the even slightly religious attacking atheists or agnostics in this manner. And that, I suppose, speaks volumes.
Theland, no disrespect intended, but how can you display such exasperation at disrespect shown to your religion when you show the same lack of respect to different beliefs?
Without wanting to get into to big a discussion about it (I'm too tired and quite frankly, fed up to be committed to that), I've seen you verbally attack Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists all in the past, not to mention other Christian faiths, such as Roman Catholics or Protestants. Not all these has "planted bombs" to my knowledge.
Okay, take Hindus out of that list, and you admit to disrespecting those other belief systems in the past, but expect respect towards your own. Plenty of atrocities have been committed in the name of your God, but personally, I like to treat someone as an individual rather than blame them for the acts of others.
Mozz and Andy - Quite right both of you.
The trouble is the necessity for context and detail, and to be perfectly honest I'm just too tired tonight.
I'd !ike to get back to this
Such has been the intensity of today's debate on religion, philosophy, existentialism etc. that I had to take refuge in Shirley Bassey's Electric Proms on YouTube. And it cheered me up no end. So, as dear Ringo would have it, peace and love, peace and love.
Believe it or not, I agree paigntonian. Respect both ways (to ABers, not necessarily religions) works best. Some religious people are happy to discuss and debate, others aren't.
The difficulty with religion, is that it's, by definition, irrational. So, when somebody tries to rationalise it, on a public site... it's easy to show otherwise.
R&S could really be closed overnight, if everybody was just honest enough to say "I believe this, because I want to".
