I have a vague memory of Biblical quotes wherein Jehovah exhorts his chosen people to smite the Midianites and to destroy them and their cattle and their children and to spare only the women who please them so that they may do with them as they see fit.

Many a millionaire has made their stash from preaching, and there's always plenty of people willing to donate.
That, plus book sales, conference tickets, and anything else you can think of.
Of course it is incumbent on us to be wary, to take what is useful, and reject the rest, especially so after the Ravi Zacharias scandal. A brilliant speaker and apologist, but with a dirty little secret that shames us all.
So we have to learn to listen discriminently to the message, but never put the messenger on a pedestal.

Paigntonian, appeal to authority by listing scientists who were allegedly christian does nothing to detract from Dawkins's logical reasoning. As he has said (roughly) knowing how a rainbow comes about doesn't detract from its power to overawe and make us marvel at it. Feynman and Sagan said similar things about our appreciation of the beauty of flowers and the cosmos; knowing how things work only makes them more remarkable.

Khandro; Dawkins would appear to be worth the price of a couple of well-heeled London houses, if your source is correct. Not surprising for a best-selling writer of many years standing. And in any case not relevant to the strength of his arguments - and at least he does have arguments which can be examined, not mere assertions which cannot.

As it is with many (not all, to be fair) religionists.
Challenged on facts and unable to respond with facts, they resort to ad hominem attacks.

Is it a loving, firm but fair, God who loves human beings on our little planet; or is it something that doesn't care about one of the scurrying ants which are polluting its otherwise quite nice creation? This might sound facetious, but seriously, how can you deduce the nature of God from the idea of a first cause?
