We have names to distinguish us from other people …. but if there's only one of him, why does he bother? Just musing.

(Actually he has many names - which seems even dafter).

An interesting point.

The JW's of course refer to him as 'Jehovah', but to the rest of us, including us heathen damned-forever non-believers, he is just plain old 'God'.

Of course you know as well as I do that 'he' doesn't actually bother for one very good reason - it's down to believers to use a name that suits them.

In fact, that is the basis for any and all religions - pick the bits that are a comfortable fit for you, including names, and go with them.
Well the angels couldnae just call him mr God
steg - // Well the angels couldnae just call him mr God //

What about 'Gov' or 'Chief'? There are plenty of options.
\\ pick the bits that are a comfortable fit for you, including names, and go with them...
or, as the JW's did, rewrite the whole thing to make an extremely comfortable fit.

Not so. In Judaism God has several names, Elohim and Yahweh, among them.

I don’t think there was much english back then
He should change his name to "Tora" that's a good solid name for a God.
“Everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved.”—ACTS 2:21
.Remember, true repentance is more than merely saying, “I am sorry.” Israelites used to rip their outer garments to show the intensity of their feelings. But Jehovah says: “Rip apart your hearts, and not your garments.
True repentance comes from the heart, from the depths of our being. It includes turning our backs on wrongdoing, even as we read at Isaiah 55:7: “Let the wicked man leave his way, and the harmful man his thoughts; and let him return to Jehovah.” It involves hating sin, just as Jesus did. (Hebrews 1:9) Then, we trust Jehovah to forgive us on the basis of the ransom sacrifice because Jehovah is “gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abundant in loving-kindness.” He will accept our worship, our spiritual grain offering and drink offering. He will listen when we call upon his name.—Joel 2:14.
TTT It's already taken (with an h on the end) I thought you were Jewish
That is for now. will come back when you got someing more exciting.
don't over excite us mate!
What is odd is that I don't believe in him, but say 'oh God' frequently.
Erm we arent doing too well on this thread

I recommend God BC by Anthony Phillips - he was ma Dean of Chapel and a Prot theologian

It is well known ( by me hur hur hur) that naming something ( lots of that on AB !) gives control over it. Hence the first commandment - oops 3rd commandment. It is all in a name.
we knew that really didnt we

Yahwah - adonai - the name of God differs between the pentateuch J and E documents - the first five books of the bible are divided into J E D P documents

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Documentary_hypothesis

the point Wellhausen was making was that the documents were written at different times with different intentions/aims

we knew that really didnt we? some of us

and the JW - following the jewish tradition of not naming froo respect - used the Yahweh consonants and Ehohim vowel pointing and got Jehovah

yeah we knew that....

Good life has a good start - quoting various bits of the bible - but Isaiah I would say, had a different purpose to Acts - which in my opinion has a clear reference to naming and they were clearly written at different times

so we have covered in some way
do we name god ?
or is it disrespectful ?
if we name, do we give power to the namer and decrease power to the named?
Out of respect should we use other words and perhaps not even call them 'names'?

can we account for the JW weird spelling? (Y)

and where can I read more ( Anthony Phillips that is!)

I mean that is not bad for a morning's post is it?

( note to Naomi: I wouldlove it if you commented foo what all dat about den foo?)

Goodlife, why don't you understand that your preaching isn't working?
Tried to snap it up PP, but 'doesn't post to Germany' - Perhaps the folks in Durham don't know where it is

You can get it on Amazon, Khandro. I've read it.
// God's Name //

Joan Osborne explored this a few years ago -

# If God had a name what would it be?
And would you call it to his face?
If you were faced with Him in all His glory
What would you ask if you had just one question? #
//Everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved.”//
Interesting, since the Hebrews had no letter J, or equivalent, (Jehovah) in their alphabet, and neither did the English until about 500 yrs ago.
(Cant be arrissed looking it up!!)
So God certainly wasnt Jehovah...
