The story of Job is, in my opinion, the cruelest saga in the whole of the Bible - the cruelty sanctioned by God.
Don't worry about it, Naomi. God doesn't exist.
but imaginations do, Hopkirk.
The Bible gives comfort to some. Helps others endure physical and mental suffering. Unfortunately it also causes dissension and argument. You get what you put in….hope or despair. Personally I see the Old Testament as a partially historical narrative.
naomi; //The story of Job is, in my opinion, the cruelest saga in the whole of the Bible - the cruelty sanctioned by God.//

In my view, The Book of Job isn't about 'cruelty sanctioned by God', it's about human fortitude in the face of adversity, - a lesson for everyone there, if you like.
Some lesson! Allow control freaks to use you and to trample all over you and all will be well. Life doesn't work like that.

'The Book of Job, a book of Hebrew scripture that is often counted among the masterpieces of world literature. It is found in the third section of the biblical canon known as the Ketuvim (“Writings”). The book’s theme is the eternal problem of unmerited suffering, and it is named after its central character, Job, who attempts to understand the sufferings that engulf him. .............'

Khandro, there's no point in telling me what I already know. Fact is the story doesn't end there and Job's situation bears no resemblance to real life. When we mere mortals are obliged to suffer unthinkable hardship very rarely are we well rewarded for it as he was. It's a nonsense to say it's a lesson.
n. The E.B. entry is a little bit longer, I didn't paste it all in; you can finish it yourself if you feel disposed;

Thank you but I don't. The story of Job is, in my opinion, sick.
n. That may be because you don't understand its message.

Also the bible doesn't have the monopoly on 'suffering'; recognition (& removal) of suffering is one of three basic characteristics of existence in Buddhism.
//n. That may be because you don't understand its message. //

More likely because I do understand the message.
The Bible doesn't really add a lot these these days and quite frankly most of the the things described in there are very far fetched which puts less credulous people off. I find Wikipedia much more useful.
Wikipedia the New Bible - now there's a thought :-)
Khandro,
Thanks for competely unanswering my post.
point proven!!!!

///Atheist //The quote about atheists and trenches is simply an assertion made by those who disapprove of atheism. No evidence of it, just a pithy soundbite to support religious beliefs.//

That may be true or not, but then, you've never been in a muddy trench in hourly fear for your life have you? - and before you ask, neither have I, but I have been so in other circumstances.

Do read Job, it's freely available online. :0) ///

What a load of absolute twaddle...
And more twaddle.
And even more twaddle after that!!

And yes, please read Job.
Khandro has never lost an entire family between
a wager between God and Satan.
//recognition (& removal) of suffering is one of three basic characteristics of existence in Buddhism//

You really are one mixed up guy Khandro!!
nailit; //You really are one mixed up guy Khandro!!//

I bow before your superior knowledge.
The Bible stands as a testament to human stupidity. That so many hold it in high regard has been for me one of its most startling revelations.
Mat 5:3 says “Happy are those conscious of their spiritual need,

So you can't be really happy without serving God.
