What about nihilism?
Question Author
I've never found any value in the joyless pursuit of self-contradiction.
Mibn ; //I've never found any value in the joyless pursuit of self-contradiction.//

But you find value in the veneration of the shortest day of the year?

and btw, absence of religious belief is NOT an oxymoron.
Khandro, you’re making no sense. You ask me if I believe in 'nothing' but your argument rests upon a man who says I anything. Which is it?
Amendment^ - I *believe* anything
naomi; It is clear that you know exactly what the question is but you are obfuscating with semantics to evade answering it.

It's back to your favourite AB default position; If you can't answer, ask another question! :0)
Of course I can answer, Khandro. I don’t believe that anything is supernatural - but that doesn't explain your contradictory argument. Perhaps if you do that we'll get somewhere.
The point is naomi, that Chesterton says those who do not believe in God will believe in anything.

Take the OP poster, - poor soul; he refutes God & replaces he void with the veneration of the shortest day of the year!

Well, why the shortest? why not the hottest (or coldest) ?
I don’t think the OP did anything of the kind, Khandro. He’s doing the opposite of veneration as indicated by the derogatory ‘heathen’.
//The point is naomi, that Chesterton says those who do not believe in God will believe in anything. //

But he's wrong.

//Take the OP poster, - poor soul; he refutes God & replaces he void with the veneration of the shortest day of the year! //

No he doesn't. What's he's done is no more than I would do when wishing Christians a happy Christmas. He doesn't venerate the solstice any more than you do.
KHANDRO, "Well, why [venerate] the shortest? why not the hottest (or coldest) ?"

When will the hottest and coldest days be in each country this year?
Surely the god thing rep!aced the veneration of the natural cycles of the earth, not the other way round. Better I think to hold something so naturally, visibly provable, with a degree of awe. Nature is a thing of wonder. Even if we are getting a good handle on a) how it happens and b) why it changes.
naomi ; //No he doesn't. What's he's done is no more than I would do when wishing Christians a happy Christmas. He doesn't venerate the solstice any more than you do.//

Then why is the OP entered as a 'Religious & Spirituality' topic, why not place it in say, Chatterbank?
That’s a fair point actually, Khandro. One could argue that all Heathens wouldn’t see it in R&S.
Khandro, //Then why is the OP entered as a 'Religious & Spirituality' //

I guess because some 'heathens' who have beliefs regard those beliefs as spiritual. Why do you have a problem with that?
Ah, yes, another fair point.
How many spiritual Heathens do we have in the Answerbank ranks, currently? Anybody?
"Nature is a thing of wonder. Even if we are getting a good handle on a) how it happens and b) why it changes."

I'm not completely sure I agree, especially the heating up part which delivers so much to professional adherents while driving the search for better habits.
Aah the Sun, the original and still the best God, the true giver of life.

worship of Aten didnt do Akhaten ( who dat den: aka Amenophis IV to be clear) a frightful lot of good - neither his son Tutankhaten, soon to revert to Tutankhamen

(who all dey den? oh read a book on Egypt)

and zoroastrians - chased up Mt Sinjar and when they got to the top their muslim liberators - chucked them off !
happy solstice - shows a reverence for solstices
and so spirituality
and so the right place

this is a bit like the office innit ( not on the agenda and then he sticks his fingers in his ears and says - "cant hear lalalal")

[our Pres tried that when I raised election interference (" not on the agenda") and someone said - Any Other Business. - - -- - That little manoeuvre did the pres no good at all]
