Why do people believe in God?, I have spoken to several deeply religious people who have all tried to put their reasons for Gods existance but as yet I can not be won over. However,I do feel that people who believe in a God have more to look forward to in death, myself I belive there is nothing after death, why should there be?. We are born to repopulate the human race, we then do the same, then we die, no different to any other animal on the planet. Why complicate things by trying to give reason to it all, perhaps thats why people need to believe in a God because we find reality a little to simplistic. As for God being the answer to all mankinds problems, how come there are so many wars over religion? Am I missing something in the grand scheme of things?

I'm not "thick" got a degree etc etc but im bu**ered if I can make any sense whatsoever out of Religion lol. Most of them just seem to tell you how to live your life and to prejudge other people who dont have the same beliefs. let's face it christianity is the biggest fairytale of them all, Jesus born on 25th Dec, Easter etc all dates straight from the Pagan calander.

Fear. A lot of thess folk consider life a living hell anyway...if they believe in God they will go to a 'better place'.

Personally I would rather live and enjoy my life then hope for something better. This isn't the dress rehearsal..this is IT!

I do however believe there's something, whether it's God or something else I dont know, but I believe that there has to be something else out there.

I dont believe in God but I do pray which may be a bit strange but I turn to whatever is there for a bit of comfort

Agree with what everyone says, I never go to church so got married in a registry office. If I get invited to Christenings I don't go, I just treat others how I like to be treated and don't need some old book make up by drunken shepherds a couple of thousand years ago to tell me whats right and wrong and what I shouldn't do. If they had their way anyone gay would be burnt at the stake lol

The first time I got married was in church. We bowed to parental pressure and both of us felt uncomfortable doing it..I thought I was going to be struck by lightning!

and I guess I like to believe someone is looking after my loved ones that have passed. But thats about it. I dont believe in the bible and I dont believe a baby should be christened without there say so.

Mr Ps ex still considers us unmarried as we 'only' got married in the registry office. She is a raving loony born again christian who is currently undergoing marriage guidance to repair her christian marriage. The pair of them haven't slept in the same bed for two years...

Why do people believe in a lot of different things?
Perhaps comfort, spiritual well-being, belief in something ethereal. Some people believe in ghosts, others don�t. Some people believe in what the stars say in their newspaper, others think it is a load of trollop. Some people believe that there are as yet undiscovered extra-terrestrials, or that aliens have indeed visited earth in their UFO�s � others think this is a load of old baloney. Some people believe in destiny and fate. Perhaps it was fate that brought you here.

Wars are not fought �over religion'. Wars are fought over power, wealth, ambition and territory, and in more recent history: oil.

As you said in your opening sentence � you haven�t been won over. Is there a particular reason as to why you would want to be? Are you seeking some belief in an afterlife? This does not necessarily entail believing in God or a god. Fortunately, as can be seen from the above you have the freedom and liberty to believe what you wish, in some parts of the world this is not so � either way you will be judged by society, believe/don�t believe your choice. An afterlife? Well we shall just have to wait and see!

Octavius you might have a point, at 50 you start to think about the countdown as I like to call it, I do not think I will see another 50 years, however my nan is still going at aged 99. Perhaps I should find God as a form of insurance just in case there is an after life, perhaps thats the answer, everyone is leaving it to the last minute then claiming to be religious just before they draw their last breath.
Its great to see so many different views and its nice to know others feel the same as I do on the subject.

Elvis we didn't have much cash when we married but �27.50 was a total bargain for my marriage in a reg. office! It was a beautiful day, I don't regret a thing and could never be a hypocrite.
My kids are not christened, btw.
I think these religious people who preach to us about God need to show us some evidence first.

I 'm not religious but if it helps people get through their life - fine. They can have God, I'll stick to chocolate.
What I have no time for is the people who say they are religious but as soon as something bad happens to them give it all up and say they can't believe in a God that would let that happen. Have they not noticed all the other things that God has let happen? Did they think they were immune because they went to church every sunday. Is it ok for everybody else to suffer 'God's will' but not them?
I also hate the petty rules that people make up. My monster in law used to go mental if anyone cut their toenails on a sunday. Apparently it says in the bible you've not to. If there is a God surely he's got more important things to worry about!

People eh! Why do they have to be different?!

And as far as the �being preached to� - outside of a church, where do you consider this happens? Perhaps you mean those who write and read the Sun, or the Daily Mail?
