Must one have believed in God to enter the afterlife?

I was just wondering that if, hypothetically speaking, an athiest dies and it turns out there was a God and they come before him is there any chance of that person being allowed into heaven. I must emphasise that the athiest actually lived a very fulfilling life. He got married at 28 and had 3 children thereafter. He was also heavily invoved in community and charity work and regularly took sick children on fun days out. But as I say he at no time had any belief in God and thought when he died that would be it. So as I say I'm just wondering would there be any chance of him getting into heaven and if not what would most likely become of him. By the way I would like the answer to come from religious texts if possible and not so much your personal theory. Of course if you want to give a theory that's grand. I apologise for my longwindedness. Thanks.

Usually Sherman it's when somebody close to a "believer" dies and they were not of that person's faith.

It can be pretty upsetting if your church is telling you that your parent for example is dammed to hell for all eternity.

Did you get your name from your sympathetic posting style? (I thought I was bad)
my name comes from nothing, its just a bit of fun really.

and how can it be upsetting if your not a believer?
i would laugh at someone who told me that!

laugh right in their stupid ignorant faces!!!
Not me - I can look after myself. Styley is looking for an answer in religous texts and appears to be talking about someone quite specific.

I was thinking that I had been a little blunt !
i think trying to find one answer that can't be contradicted in another part of the bible is almost impossible!!! personally i couldnt even be bothered to find anything that anyone would class as a 'concrete' fact or truth in there cause there just isnt one!!!
Ra Ra Ra, Ramble ramble............ whats that they say about never to discuss relgion or politics?!?!

My knowledge is none but my view is this:

If he was a decent guy, he'll go to a decent place, if he wasn't (and i'm talking pre meditated murder, paedophlia, etc) he won't. Simple as

P.S. This is hell on earth!!
