The same respect as each other?
I don't know that they should. They're all equally bogus but clearly if you have one religion that says, 'Hey, be nice to each other' and another that makes people say, 'Hey, let's blow up tube trains,' or 'Hey, let's go to war on false pretenses', then the latter two would command a bit less respect.

Everyone should be treated with the basic respect that is politeness and good manners.
Beyond that, if people behave in a way that draws respect from others, ie if they treat others well and are polite in return, then they will earn the respect due. If they don't, they won't. Simple as that. Religion shouldn't come into it.

no not really as in pastafarianism just the general notion of piracy of religion, like for example the dates attributed to the main religions and those which follow after.
Personally i feel that each religion deserves respect, for what it is in its own standing, whether i agree or not simply because it exists. I don't see too much of a point otherwise.
Does longevity in religion equal respect? What about the notion of respect?And if some religions have more prestige so to speak what about the notion of religion in terms of prestige?

to look at the idea that certain religions have more respect/prestige: for example judaism as opposed to the much mentioned spaghetti monster, is the difference in prestige (assuming there is a difference) geographically dependant or?social/ cultural/ political /economical /educational /commercial/ or historically dependant?
jjja, how does piracy come into this? You mean like Blackbeard or what? I'm sure you must mean something other than pirates but blowed if I can think what exactly. I can't see any reason to respect someone simply because they believe in someone; my respect is earned more by people's actions rather than their faith.
Waldo, Just out of curiosity, would your point out chapter/verse? I was under the impression they might have an open door policy to truth and change when they are shown the error in their ways. Perhaps someone here could set them straight?

It's by no means the most homophobic thing I've read, but there is an insidiousness to it that I don't like. Part of me says he is getting into trouble because of an overly pedantic use of language, but since it's been pointed out to him how his words can be taken and he stands by them, I'm not sure.
It's a shame, because a lot of what he says is entirely sensible, though I'm not keen on the religious-style language personally.

Waldo, The forums presented an insightful and thought provoking discussion (at least) to a subject I have not explored that deeply. Don�t have anything to add at the moment but I think I may be wearing this thread thin and there seems to be a potential for another thread here??? Thanks for expressing and pointing out your grievances with 'The Church of Reality'.

respect for what something/anything is? regardless? though is the very idea of respect (when disected) hypocritical?

Respect is indeed a double-edged sword. While we should respect an entity for it virtues it is equally important to acknowledge the detrimental effects posed by inherent vises. Respect for reality demands equal time in rewarding virtues as well as illuminating vices so that they can be dealt with as they must in the hope of weighing in favor of what is beneficial over what is detrimental to the existence of those whose life hangs in the balance.
A respect for the existence of humanity is a respect for reason as this is the virtue of humanity that makes humanity what it is in contrast to what it was and determines the proper path to what it should become. Most religions ignore or condemn this crucial facet of the human entity while twisting the rules of logic in the hope of persuading stagnation or reversion to an earlier state in our evolution. Religion and Science both must comply with the inevitable requirement to evolve or fall by the wayside.
While the entity described as 'God' does not exist we must acknowledge that the idea and belief do indeed exist or we disarm ourselves from the ability to deal with the dire consequences that follow from the actions initiated by those who hold as a �virtue� the belief in the existence of a non-existent entity.
