Evil - what is it?

What do we mean be evil? My definition would be the deliberate, intentional harming of others. It is possible to harm others without actually intending to, but that's thoughtlessness or inconsideration, not actually evil. Evil has to be a consciously taken choice. Any thoughts?

So whenever you see an act you have decided is, or have been led to believe is, 'evil' then surely the non-intervention upon your part acts as a facilitator for the perpetrator, and will itself form part of the greater evil ?

If George W. Bush is evil, then he must be acting against his own conscience of what is right and wrong.
He may have believed the misinformation from the intelligence reports and decided that the best option was to go to war when he did.
It is surely all about motives.
If the Iraqui invasion was simply for oil, then it wwas evil, but if it was to save the west from Saddams supposed WMD, then the motives were different and so not evil.

The vast majority of the perpetrators sre muslims, as are the vast majority of the victims, ans those are facts.
Even in Iraq, the figures for muslims killing muslims outstrips the figures for Iraquis killed by coalition forces.
There's a democratic government in Iraq yet the killing goes on. Why? Because the terrorists with the bombs do not want their fellow citizens to have a say in how they are governed.

Why have muslim terrorists been targeting western democracies and their citizens since the 1960's? What did hijacked plane passengers have to do with middle eastern politics, or the airport massacre in Italy for example?
In other words, there is an ideology that is gathering pace which drives the hatred against the west, and we are all potential victims.
I would love to hear your suggestions on how this problem should be tackled.

Evil is a perception. I don't believe that any soul is 'evil'. The actions of certain people perceived by certain people are named as 'evil'.
Those same actions, perceived by others are named necessary, understandable, inevitable, heroic.
No sane person will undertake acts which would be perceived as evil. All those who commit atrocities, either personal or state lead, are in the least mis-educated and mostly 'damaged' in some way.
That doesn't mean they should be permitted to act as they choose - they must be prevented from submitting all others to their 'warped' view of life.
People all over the world are subjected to widely differing experiences of society, justice, values, compassion and develop widely differing opinions of how to preserve 'what they know to be right!'
It's all about perception. And until we all perceive life in the same way there will always be judgements and acts perceived as 'evil'!
