St George was a saint, not only for Christians in the Holy Land but also for Muslims and Jews as well. A figure of unity.

That he is not only a saint for Christians is very crucial. If you go to Al-Khader (near Bethlehem), you will find a church and monastery of St George, which is predominantly visited by Muslims. Also in Lod it is not only the church that is dedicated to St George but also the Mosque next door, Jamia al-Omar, one of the oldest mosques in the region. To Muslims he is very holy and Al-Khader, or the "green one", is the name they use for St George.

So there is no reason why they wouldn�t celebrate it, I imagine many of them met it with as much gusto as your average British Joe.

Since he's mentioned in the Qur'an there's no reason for Muslims not to celebrate. How many English Christians celebrated it or even KNEW it is St George's Day?

Interesting that you should ask about muslims rather than say English Jews.

I thought we stopped going on about saints 400 years ago in this country!

Question was directed to me for specific reasons. But Thanks to Octavius who said more than what I could have said. I would just add few more things here. Muslims respects all those people who acted upon the true teachings of Jesus (pbuh). Because we believe all the messengers from Adam (pbuh) to Muhammad (pbuh) delivered the same message worship only one God. All of us know here that by whom and when this illusion of trinity started.

Other problem is that the way names were changed in English language. A huge number of people do not understand who we are talking about. I do admit that for a long period of time I was always confused with messengers and saints names. Few names are a bit similar but few are way apart from the real. For example John is Yahya (pbuh) in Arabic. David is Dawood, Jesus is Isa, Mary is Mariam, and so on. I am not sure how these names were driven. May be someone with a bit more knowledge can help. May be from Hebrew, I have no idea.
