Slang name for God

Does anyone know why God is sometimes referred to as "The Big Cheese"? Have heard this term on The Simpsons among other sources, but can't place its' origin.

It�s just a common synonym for a Very Important Person.

I don�t think there is any particular origin.

You have the big cheese�.big enchilada�big shot� big kahuna�big name�.high muckamuck�. top banana� head honcho�. the bossman amongst many many others.
