a question please.
If the jews didn't eat pork can some one tell me why they were kept at all?
I can't think of any other reason for them being kept as we don't use their milk or skin unless it's used for leather.
I know that they were kept in biblical times as they are mention several times in the bible.
Thanks for your time.

According to Jewish Myths and Legends, (one version), the Pig was created by God to clear up, eat, all the droppings from the other animals and humans, and left over food on the Ark. (the Pig is omnivorous).

In reality, there were no Kosher laws prior to the book of Leviticus, so its possible that until then, jews ate Pork.

There's some evidence also, in the New Testament, that Jewish businessmen kept pigs, although whether for eating or selling, it doesn't say.

This doesn't actuallyanswer your question, but i'll be watching for other replies, I might learn something.

Muslims won't eat it either.

Perhaps it has something to do with pork being a dangerous meat if not fresh or refrigerated, and they originate from hot countries.

This possibly got 'translated' into a religious reason not to eat it.

Us northern countries don't have such problems, as it's so bleedin' freezing here.
Good question Tigerlily. Perhaps it because there weren't only Jews around. There was a diverse population in that area, and traders came and went - and don't forget that Islam didn't exist until several hundred years after Christianity began.
As far as I can think of Lonnie is right and it is true that pigs are cleaners. They will eat any thing.

Panic button - That question has been answered many time before. Pigs flesh contains few bacteria and other things which can not be cured cold climate or hot.

Naomi - Islam believes in all the messengers before Muhammad (pbuh) so all the laws revealed to them are accepted by Muslims with the additions of laws later revealed to Muhammad (pbuh) and the word for these laws (somewhat controversial here) is Sharia. So it was known as Sharia of Moses (pbuh), Sharia of Jesus (pbuh) and Sharia of Muhammad (pbuh) etc. For example alcohol was not forbidden during the earlier days and later when verses revealed in Quran, alcohol became forbidden and made unlawful.
It doesn't really matter what Islam believes. The simple fact is Islam did not exist in biblical times.

Err... what's alcohol got to do with pigs?
Oh, yes, of course. How silly of me. Err ... but ... hang on ..... totally illegal. Shucks!
Islam did not exist during biblical time. Did Christianity and judaism exist? Who came up with these names? any idea?
Truth difficult to accept, eh, Keyplus?
I think that wild boar and pork were one of the main ingredients of your average Roman cookery class for many centuries, so they would have remained useful for their flesh and thus kept in swineherds, as Naomi has said by many other groups.

I would guess given the Romans in occupation of Judea, that although were content to let the Jews live as they did and thought that the no pork rule and circumcision were odd, would have kept pigs and maybe even paid jewish farmers to keep pigs. Even though this was also against their religion, it would make sense to retain some trade links with the occupying forces. Wasnt the father of the prodigal son a pig farmer?
The names 'Christian' and 'Jew 'pre-date Jesus by several centuries.

The word Christian is literally an amalgam of 'Christ' and 'Ian', the twin sons of God that scripture said would come to save us. Years later, this came to pass. Although the latter has been removed from the Old and New Testaments, it is acknowledged that Ian was the twin brother of Jesus (the latter being the 'lamb' of God, the former being the 'calf'.) Ian was crucified at the age of 24, having enraged many with his best-known miracle: turning water in wine, killing all fish in the Sea of Galilee in what was a huge ecological error.

Jews were and still are awaiting the son of God. That belief that his arrival should have happened long ago gives us the word 'Jew' - originally spelt 'Due', as in 'Surely he's due by now?' Until the 1500s, Jews were known as Over-dues or Long-over-dues.
Not forgetting the ones from Del Monte, the Orange-Dues.
I see nobody with any sound Scriptural knowledge is reading this page! Since I dont think any here will understand Scripture concerning the 'dietary' instructions, I won't bother to bore you..., but you all are beating around the bush!
What has scripture got to do with the survival of your average pig over the last 2,000 years or so?
Nice story Quinlad - But I do wonder if they spoke English at that time as Due, Ian, Christ are mainly English words. Or I might be wrong.

Naomi - Yes you are right about the truth, but I wonder what you are referring to as truth as from my recent experience your truth changes according to the situation and few others are aware of it. Atheist or not atheist rings a bell.
Keyplus, oh Keyplus - what a disappointment youve turned out to be. I would have sworn that you of all people would celebrate - nay, veritably laud - the wonder of revelation, but even the most faithful, it seems, have their doubts. Id watch out if I were you. Hearing imaginary bells is not a good sign.

(By the way, Im rather into the study of psychology, so indulge me here. In your frequent endeavours to undermine me, it seems you often feel it necessary to add and few others are aware of it, or words to that effect. Are you really so insecure in your own intellect that you need to continually attempt to rally support? Do tell. To an observer of the human psyche, such as myself, its quite fascinating).
Question Author
Thank you for your answers.
I was questioning why the Hebrews kept them.
If they didn't eat them as Pigs have very few uses otherwise.
I see that there are answers and good ones. I was not aware that Hebrews ate Pork before leviticus.
Thanks Lonnie for that.
I was looking at it at it from the point of view of the bible mostly.
I know Muslims don't eat it but I wasn't looking for a reason for that.

I do understand that there were medical reasons for it not to be eaten. This is one of the reasons why I asked as to why they were kept at all.

Keyplus: those who fight the hardest and talk the most are those who feel unsure of the reason why they fight.
I am sure of what I believe although sometimes I do question it. But if you don't you can't fully understand it.
Again thank you all for the answers.

keyplus - excuse my ignorance, but what does pbuh stand for?
