As some of you know, I'm not Christian. However, even as a card carrying Pagan I recognise that Christmas has far overtaken the older celebrations of midwinter, and for most of us it's even overtaken the Christian celebration (come on, admit it, how many of you actually go to church that morning?) and is now a great family time.

What is your Christmas? What does it mean to you?

For me, this radio advert (now a tradition on Irish radio) sums it up nicely.

im not a member of the happy clappy god squad, but whatever makes xmas special to you is fine by me
Christmas for me is spending the day with the ex husband, cooking dinner, washing up, getting sloshed by six then either, a) shagging him or, b) aruging with him.. then stumbling into bed and vowing 'never again'.. then being left alone on boxing day as ex takes the kids to his brothers.. Festive.. not!

Tradition, family, friends, entertaining, a house full of people for days, happy times, laughter - and a lot of hard work! No, I don't go to church on Christmas Day, but I go to our little country church's Carol Service on the Sunday before Christmas - with mince pies and mulled wine for everyone afterwards. Although our church has a very small congregation throughout the year, practically everyone in the village, and all the children, turn up for Carols before Christmas. It's lovely. I know, for a non-believer, strictly it's hypocritical, but I am prominent in my community so I'm expected to go - and besides - no excuses - I like it, and can trill away with the best of them - as long as no one listens too closely. :o/

(Apart from that, I'm quite a fan of this man Jesus, and feel very sorry for the way he's been treated and misused over the centuries. I'm happy to go to his birthday bash once a year - even if the date is way out).
I celebrate the end of the Days getting shorter and the begining of 'em lengthening.
Putting up the tree and decorations
Time away from work
Spending quality time with my own family
Spending quality time with the extended family
Visiting my fathers grave
Visiting friends
Village Christmas festival with carols
Midnight mass
My daughter opening all her presents on Christmas day morning
Playing with her and her toys
People turning up throughout the day
Drinking, cooking, drinking, eating, drinking
Laughing and having fun

To me it means spending quality time with quality people. I dont get much chance to do that the rest of the year.
Oh Vienna...
As an atheist, I spend the day eating babies and worshiping demons I don't believe in.
I think rojash spends the day watching re-runs of Rising Damp.
