My RC church back home had the cross rather than the crucifix. It was pretty radical at the time it was installed, and the Parish Priest got a little negative reaction but most of the congregation warmed to it when he explained that it represented the risen Christ, rather than the dead suffering one.
Octavius is correct. The empty cross symbolizes the Risen Christ instead of a suffering Christ on the cross. Most protestant churches have the empty cross displayed.

many thanks for answers especially Octavious as I have rcvd answers from you in the past another question what is the difference a faith and a religion as my friend calls it the Methodist faith and my Catholic religion
No difference, mja. All religious belief is pure faith - belief without the need for evidence.
Chakka has it right mja, but perhaps your friend is referring to the doctrinal aspect of Catholicism, which is contrasted with their 'method' of practising one's faith.

In any event, you would both be part of the Christian faith.
It is a difference of approach between these two branches of the Christian faith - the Catholics believe that the suffering of Christ on earth is central to our redemption and it should be seen as a constant reminder of his agonies to save our souls.

The Anglican church prefers to believe that the optimism and hope for salvation is best shjown by the cross with Christ absent - already risen and in heaven, which is where we all aspire to follow by living good lives.

As advised, there are variations - some high Anglican churches show a cross with Christ still crucified, but the broad themes are the norm.
