Obviously not, but there is a Jewish sect known as the Messianic Jews who accept that Jesus is the promised Messiah. They are shunned by mainstream Jewry.

Mike is correct but there are several branches of Jewish beliefs that are shunned by the mainstream Conservative and/or Reform Jewish majority...

I'm confused (not an unusual occurrence) by rowanwitch's response in that "somewhat" is actually on the order of about 2,000 years... at least. And I haven't a clue as to what Naomi's usually succinct response means... as related to the original question...

In respect of Rowan's post, me too Clanad. My response was simply confirmation that Judaism does indeed pre-date Christianity and had little to do with the original question - I think. :o/

Well I guess another part of the question should be ..Why do Christians worship Jesus as their God when he was born ,lived and died a Jew? He himself was never a Christian.

In answer to the question, practicing Jews cannot regard themselves as Christian, because Jesus is the Christian Messiah, and Jews are still waiting for the Messiah to come, although we do believe that Jesus may well have existed.

Having said that, The Islamic religion believes that Jesus was an Islamic Prophet, was Jesus a Muslim or Jew?.

Golly Gosh! Someone else who actually understands what litotes means and its use as a figure of speech. Hope I'm not being too hyperbolic in my praise.

As for litotes... nothing in rowan's post vaguely fits the description of a litotes... Additionally, correct me if I'm wrong, but a quoted source (such as rojash's) should always be attributed, no? (Wikipedia in this case)
Actually, I rather think rowan's post, if not fufilling the intent of Ockham's razor, more fits that described as a paralepsis...

I'm puzzled, as to why you think rowan's post doesn't fit the definition, Clanad, Are you saying that the claim "Judaism predates Christianity, somewhat" is NOT an understatement? Or is it that you believe that the understatement was not deliberate, or not intended to provide emphasis.

This way of speaking is very common in the UK, perhaps not so common in the US - one of those occasions when we are divided by a common language.
