What is the best theme park in Britain?

Britain may be a small country but there are some great theme parks that can provide fun for all the family - most of them are just short drives away from many major cities.

Staffordshire is home to the Alton Towers Resort, which is set in lush woodland and includes a hotel and spa for those who want to spend a bit more time there.

If you plan on visiting Alton Towers then it is advisable to set off very early as the route takes you straight through the town of Alton, which can easily become grid-locked with the amount of traffic heading to the theme park.

The theme park is home to some white-knuckle rides such as Oblivion, which is a rollercoaster with a completely vertical drop. Other fan faves are the Rip Saw, Air and Nemesis rides, each with their own unique thrills and spills.

If a seaside setting and some candy floss is more up your street, then Blackpool Pleasure Beach combines traditional fun with some thrill rides.

The Pepsi Max Big One reaches a height of 235 ft and is Europe's tallest rollercoaster. Others rides include the Irn Bru Revolution, the wet and watery Valahalla and the classic Big Dipper.

Also on offer is adventure golf, a ghost train and go karts, as well as lots of other activities.

Remember to wrap up if you head there in off-season, as it can get quite cold at times.

Down south is Chessington World of Adventures. Located about 12 miles from London, this could be perfect for those in the capital for a short break.

Not only are there rides at this theme park, but a zoo as well, so there is an abundance of stuff to do.
